Living through your hunts this year

Guy, me and the wife will have to live vicariously through your eyes this year. We have taken in my father who is battling Alzheimer's right now. He is a tough old bird at 88 and I made him a promise that I wouldn't put him in a home unless he wanted to or we couldn't do it anymore. Last night...

    Mescalero cow elk hunt

I am only posting this as a warning to others who may try this in the future. We called the Inn of the Mountain Gods Big Game Hunt people and asked a specific question, "will the results be available prior to April 3rd?" We were told the drawing would be on March 19th and we could call on the...

    Any thoughts

I’ve acquired a few .280’s, not the AI’s. Wife has a Browning BAR in a 7mm. Been debating an elk gun that doesn’t weigh a metric ton like the BAR. One of the 280’s is a single shot and doesn’t offer quick second shots. The other is a Ruger M77 mark 2 and needs a trigger job and could certainly...

    The journey has begun...

We are about 2 hours east of Dallas. Left Jacksonville Florida yesterday afternoon and stopped in to see my dad in New Orleans. Avoided any damage from the hurricane and saw a 300 plus mile traffic jam. All of those that fled the storm were headed back yesterday along with the service trucks...

    Elk Tags for sale

We are supposed to leave next Tuesday problem is this smallish hurricane is about to hit us here in Florida. Can't leave until I make sure my kids, friends and house are in one piece plus the additional thousands of people on the road headed the direction we need to go. We are being told to...

    Elk Hunting Camp Etiquette

Hopefully someone on here can give us some insight. This is our first elk hunt and we will be road camping. We have seven areas identified so far with two of those being forest service camp ground. Aside from those two, what is the normal etiquette for distance between camps? I do not want...

    GAIA App

Just wanted to know if anyone here uses this app over a traditional GPS? I have used it on my hikes through our local woods and it is pretty accurate and since we will be truck camping the battery drain shouldn't be an issue but I did buy 2 of those usb rechargables.

    Camping Elevations

Alright guys, need some input for myself and the wife. We are going to be in south central Colorado for the last week and a half of archery elk this year. 130 days out but who is counting. Being from Florida and coming from our low elevation, the question of camping is where we seem to be stuck...

    Merino Wool Care

Guys, A serious question on the care of merino wool base layers. We typically use unscented laundry soap on our hunting clothes and since wool is delicate, what do you use? I haven't found unscented woolite or anything similar. Do you wash by hand and air dry it when out for over a week?

    Minimum draw weight for elk

Looking for a bow for my wife in case we don't draw wyoming this year. She can pull 45 pounds now and I believe that we can get her to 55 by September. I am not an engineer and I tried to understand KE, some people said more is better other say speed, so I don't really know. But her draw length...

    2017 Wyoming Elk

Serious question here. Coming from the Southeast, we will be hunting Southern Wyoming the last 2 weeks of September next year. Are there mosquitoes to worry about? I have been told by a friend that is a wildlife photographer that they can be absolutely brutal, and this from a guy in Florida...

    Wyoming in September

Need some help here. We, myself and wife, will be hunting south central Wyoming next year for elk. We will be camping near camp sites and driving/walking in from there. We are expecting temps from the 30's-80's. What is a reasonable/durable tent that may also be used during the archery season of...

    1st bow in 20 years

Alright guys, I've bought a used Mathews DXT 28"/70# for an upcoming elk hunt next year. It has been 20 years since I've hunted with the stick and string, last bow was a Jennings Buckmaster with a PWC. I could not see spending that kind of money for a new bow that I may never use again, so I got...

    Drop camp or not

Alright for our first time we are considering a drop camp setup. Being brought in 2 or 3 hours by horses and hunting from the camp every day and not having to come out every night. This is in south west Colorado and would be our first time elk hunting, no guide just paying for drop camp and...

    1st time for everything

I have been a long time lurker and this is my first post. Myself (age 47) and my wife (cannot say ) will be going DIY next year to Colorado by way of Jacksonville, Florida. We are still in the planning, excitement and exercising phases. It will be an archery elk hunt and I am going in with...
