Cow elk preference points Wyoming

I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I was looking at doing a cow elk hunt in Wyoming and was looking at the odds and was wondering if applying for a cow tag affects the points that I already have accumulated or if its a separate pool of points altogether? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere

Reduced price cow tags are random and don't use points. A full price cow tag (type 4, for example) uses points. An elk point is an elk point whether you use it for a cow or bull tag.

Type 4 or 5 uses points
Type 6 or 7 does not

Also, some type 4 or 5 tags might be attainable on second choice - which would also not take your preference points

Correct me if I'm wrong, if you pull a Type 4 cow tag as a second choice, your points are not used and gain another.

That's true as long as you don't mind paying $700 for a cow elk tag as a non resident.
