A couple of days I ago I decided to head out for a chamois hunt. I was returning to a place I had hunted once before and knew that my chances were good as I had seen 7 chamois on the previous trip. The previous trip was exactly 12 months previously and the weather was the same, little wind and sunny.

After about 3 hours climb I spotted two chamois very high and a few km's away. They were safe from me, but it was great to watch them for about 15 mins until a helicopter flew over them and spooked them into a hidden gut.

A couple of hours later I spotted two more chamois that where at about 1300 metres high and only 1 km away. After about a 2 hour stalk I got nice and close and shot the larger size chamois, but still only a medium size for New Zealand. I carried out the meat and managed to get back to my car before dark which is always nice. The gps told me I have walked over 15kms and over 1600 virtual meters for the day.

Normally they just flop over but this guys head just stayed up right :)
Rigor mortis, what Kiwi hunter didn't say was although it was not far away it was on top of another mountain, so hike down and up and a few hours later....:D

Stunning part of the world, it's on my list.

Cheers

Richard

Congrats! My in-laws have been there twice hunting and had a great time. Would love to get over there and hunt myself!

Thanks for the comments guys.

My report should read vertical meters not virtual meters! Although virtual meters would be easier on my knees!
