Will 6-48 screws work in an 8-40 base hole? In other words, will the 6-48 screw catch the lip and secure an 8-40 base? The rifle only accepts 6-48s and I purchased an 8-40 talley base. I have the option of just ordering some 6-48 screws from Talley. I would return the base but procrastination pushed me past the return date.

If your dead set on using 6-48 screws in an 8-40 hole and not buying the correct base I’d JB weld the base to the action as well.
I would just sell the base and buy the correct one.

I had to drill and tap a base screw out once. It really ruined my day. With that high of a torque no glue will hold. If you strip out the hole in the action you are screwed. I wouldn't chance it.

I’m pretty sure the OP is asking if the head of a 6-48 screw would be snug enough in the hole of the base that’s opened for a 8-40 screw. The action is threaded 6-48.
Either way if it were my personal rifle I’d just buy the proper base.

Ordered a new one. It was the better choice.
