Everyone I've ever heard give application advice on NM says to put "no" for your fourth choice, but no one ever really details exactly what tag(s) you are eligible to draw. So I'm curious, has anyone actually selected "yes" for the 4th choice, and if so what tag did you receive / what was your experience?

I have had friends that have drawn the 4th choice. Most if not all those hunts have been depredation hunts in areas where they are trying to keep the elk population down. Hope this helps

I always put a fourth choice. Fourth choice hunts are only available in the case of leftover tags. There were no any weapon leftovers for elk in NM last year except for hunts that are only for NM residents, and all but one of those hunt codes was antlerless.
A) leftovers are the least desirable hunts in the state.
B) there basically are no leftovers for elk.
C) a leftover for anything else is likely a low harvest success, low trophy quality hunt and most are antlerless.
D) you can’t decline a fourth choice even if the date is bad for you.
E) I’ll probably never draw a fourth choice and if I do, there’s a good chance that I’ll regret it.
