Start with an old or undersize bore brush. Below the bristles wrap the brush body with masking tape untill it fits fairly snugly in the bore. Using a cleaning rod with a swiveling handle, push the brush roughly 1/2 way into the throat and mark the rod, Then push the brush forward untill 1/2 the brush is exposed at the muzzle and mark that spot on the rod. I generally use pliers to crimp the bristles down a bit to allow a good flow of melted lead around the bristles. With the end of the brush even with the muzzle and the rifle held upright pour a table spoon or so of molten lead around the brush. This is now your lapp. After it cools push the lapp 1/2 way out the bore again and apply lapping compound. Then back and forth, reappling compound as needed. Never let the lapp fully exit the bore at either end. If it does pour a new lapp, don't try to line it up again.
You are done when the stroke has an even amount of resistance along the length of the bore. I would note that the only bore that needed 30 minutes of work was an imported kit gun muzzleloader with a seriously tight spot in the tube.
Anybody do it differently?
