Several years ago I went sturgeon fishing with a friend of mine when you could fish the fast water below Bonneville Dam. We used fresh, whole shad for bait. I caught (and released) five that day that went eight to eleven feet long. An 11 footer takes about 20 minutes to land and the 8 footer took 10 minutes. The same friend went out a few days later and caught one 13 ft. long. Last year my brother was fishing the Columbia estuary and hooked one that had a "head like a garbage can," and appeared to be at least 15 feet long when it surfaced, but he was using light tackle (for small, keeper-size fish) and broke it off rather than face the impossible.
