Antelope Contest -- Winner get's nothing.

Here's a pic of the new Utah State Record. That's my Dad in the pic. Only 15 3/8 long!

Kurt, what did Lobster end up green scoring/official scoring? I forget.

Useful Reference Points for Judging Pronghorn

Eli, that Utah lope is HUGE!! Did you guys know it was THAT big? What's the measurement above the prong??

I did have the Lobster measured and have all the paperwork, just haven't got around to sending it in. He was 16 3/4 tall, had 6 3/4 on the bottom 2, and 6 3/4 above the prong, with a 5 1/4 prong. He gross scored 83 1/8, net scored 82 6/8.

Tom, good suggestion on that bush, but since bushes can vary with the wind, I prefer to use other reference points. Eli's video helped me with this, even on the lobster. You can use the width of the eye, the ear length, and the length of the eye to the nose as reference points. Sometimes these things vary from place to place and animal to animal. Thanks to the research efforts of my friend Mike Lely, I also know the average length of a Montana pronghorn's semi-erect penis. Just like other inhabitants of Montana, the antelope here are incredibly well hung when compared to other states such as Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, and especially Texas.

Eli, list your estimates on Stubby. I'm probably going to shoot him and if I'm happen to be so lucky, I'll list the official measurements. It can be used as proof that your video is worth the $ when it comes to judging antelope.

I knew just how big the Lobster was after carefully studying this photograph I took of him prior to the season...

Pass me the puke bucket, please. Pronghorn porn, that will do it. haha Do you save the ball sack? Tan it, make a TV remote control holder or something like that? Some people do that.

Ullery's buck was 5 2/8 above the prong.

Stubby's measurements...and my rep...

L - 13 2/8
P - 6 1/8
B - 7 5/8
1 - 7 5/8
2 - 4 4/8
3 - 3

84 2/8

I know, I know, that's kinda big for a 13 inch buck, but hey, what can I say. I will issue this following disclaimer for the above estimated score...I've never been to Montana or had a buck from Montana in my hands or seen a buck from Montana in person. Slightly different from the one's I sent you Kurt, but very close. I just think that having 15 6/8 on the bottom is slightly absurd.

Pretty darn hard to judge. I'm not an expert by any means, but I have a great ability to judge lengths and distances due to my surveying background. I spend my days measuring both long and short and guessing at short measurements. I looked at three antelope this past weekend and was withing 1/2" on all of them just looking at them. Taxedermist was amazed. Could have just gotten lucky too. Stubby has tons of mass but I'll be surprised if he's much over 12" long. They're so dang difficult to field judge. I'd shoot him. Hope you get this one and fill us all in on the score. Good luck.

Stubby could be the 1st buck in the B&C book that is under 13". I thumbed through the record book the other day, there's 3 in there that are under 14". He's a unique buck that better enroll in the pronghorn protection and relocation program in the next few days, or suffer the consequences. I think he's 13" tall. Heavy ones look shorter, so do ones with donkey heads.

Stubby's demise -- Murphy's Law of antelope seasons

Just found out today Stubby was killed during the archery season had 13 3/8 and 13 5/8 length, gross score of 83 7/8 and net of 82 1/2. Opening day of rifle season another buck was killed just over the hill from where I was hunting, after hearing the shot, I set up the spotter and saw a very young hunter was being photographed with the buck. Apparently, this kid's father is the one who arrowed Stubby. The young hunter's buck net scored 86". I knew it looked aweful big, huge prongs, but I never went up to the hunters to talk to them. Should have, would have then known the kids' dad took a very short and heavy buck during the archery hunt.

The buck I was hoping to take in MT gross scored 85 and net scored 83 6/8. It too was taken by a bowhunter during the August part of the season.

I missed the buck by 3/8 gross and 1 6/8 net. And you guys thought me and Kurt were crazy...I'd say we didn't do too shabby (especially me since all I had was a few pics.) I'll bet his right horn was the bigger of the two. Shameless video plug next...
