You're not going to kill a deer too dead.

I guess if you hunt from a tree stand and your longest shot will be 60 yards, it might be a little too much. But most of the places out west are open enough that long shots are possible. I want something that's gonna be able to reach out and touch something and still have enough energy to do the job right. JMHO, though. I'm sure others have different ones!

Nah...it's too little! Get the Weatherby version and shoot 200 grainers as fast as yours shoots the 180's... Just kidding. I used to use a .300 Win with 180 gr for everything, and it flat killed them dead.

that is what i shoot out of my 300 WBY and definitely don't think it is too small or too big of a bullet for the job on deer.

I have been using 180gr ballistic tips in my 300 win mag for 3 years and the furthest any deer has gone after being hit was 30 yards.

Three years ago I killed a doe at 380 yards, dropped it.
Killed a second doe at 420 yards, it went 30 yards.

Two years ago I hit a doe at 250 yards on the run, it didn't go far.

Last year I killed a doe at 75 yards, it never took another step.

Killed a doe last year 2 days later at 388 yards, it went 30 yards, died.

When I do finally get to go elk hunting I will use the 180gr ballistic tip. I have talked to a guy in Montana that has used his 300 win mag with 180gr ballitic tips for over 10 years now. He has killed over 10 elk (bulls and cows) with his longest kill at a measured 910 yards. Thats out of my league, I have mine worked out to only 750 yards.

All the deer I killed with mine (except the 75 yard kill) where at a known distance prior to squeezing the trigger.

Anybody that says the 180gr ballistic tips blow up never used them, thats all BS.

I'm sure that it will work, but maybe I should qualify that with...... which 180gr bullet. I saw a big buck that my ole buddy MLM nail with a 300 win and there wasn't much left that was good to eat unless of course you liked picking out the bone splinters and blood shot. (Of course he only used one shot.....that is his M.O.)

Personally, for the deer back here I think it is over kill, my logic is that if a 243 with 95gr, a 25-06 with a 117gr or a 280 with a 139gr will work, why put yourself through all the extra recoil of the 180gr? Just my opinion for what it is worth.

Since most of us in the North west usually hunt elk , bear and deer all at the same time, it is not all that fun packing a gun for each animal.Unless you live in Utah and practice the multiple wife method, you will not be carrying a 25-06 for deer, a 300 WM for elk and bear. Stick with the 300, you can't go wrong. I would personally stay away from the boattails for elk. I have seen the boattails kill elk and I have seen them just blow up on impact at close ranges. I once watched my best friends brother who had ran this bull up next to a cliff and shot it 7 times with boat tails at about 30 yards before the bull just jumped off the cliff.( about a 12-15 foot drop) after further inspection only one of the bullets penetrated more than 3 inches past the hide.If you want bone crushing knock down power in a factory load go with the Federal Safari Grade bullets. Never seen an animal get up after recieving one of these.

Great choice!! All I ever used in my 300 Win Mag. was 180g Nosler Partitions. I killed several Mulies with it, worked great, stayed togetherbut expanded well. Not excessively bloodshot. NOT AT ALL. I whis the rifle hadn't been stolen, I loved it. Kills the he$$ out'a bigger stuff too. I even used it on feral goats and such, killed 'em like lightening, and not an oversized exit hole either!
This was my 300.

The 180 grn will do the trick just fine Moose and it is not too much for Deer,it is just right.I use the 165 Nosler ballistics and the 180 grn Nosler partition for Deer and use the 180 partition and the 200 partition for Elk.
