Anything can happen in the Fall in Idaho. I wouldn't doubt that you could easily hit 15 degrees at that elevation on a clear night in October. However, Shoup or Salmon would rarely ever hit 15 degrees that time of year. If it's just your sleeping bag that can't go much below that, then I...
How did this balloon full of hot, smelly air get deflated in national print? Oh yeah, it's the NYT.
All of his arguments fall flat, including that large predators worldwide are doing poorly. It's funny that he should say this in light of the very context he is talking about - a television...
Timely, Fin. And I agree whole-heartedly. There is another screw to throw into the gears, and that is the fact that state wildlife agencies have to manage the wildlife. They are often put in reactionary positions when federal policies directly affect the wildlife. Of course, the introduction...
Here's my personal take. I think drawing one of the super-tags or governor's tags would be great. No question. But for me, my ultimate goal would not be to kill the bull that scores the absolute highest that I could find. I guess the hunting experience is much more than that for me. I would...
Ditto the George Noory & Skoal. I would think that pot smoke would ruin the fresh, sagebrush scented air for my nose that I so enjoy when traveling to my hunting spot... but I wouldn't know!
Unit 36A is one of my favorites, so I'm agreeable to looking at its story! (In fact, I applied for the controlled bull hunt there).
IF&G's strategy in the last decade has been to drastically reduce the cow population there. The objective for cows has been, and still is today, to maintain...
Elkmagnet,
I agree with some of what you say. But I don't think "the" elk herd in Idaho is that desperate. Calf recruitment can be great in one part of the state, and horrible in the next. In fact, it can be good in one drainage, and poor in the neighboring one. As you know, we've had some...
Elkmagnet, I gotta respectfully disagree. We all know that wolves are taking their toll. But that doesn't mean that there aren't vast areas of the state that aren't hunting quite well. Look at the harvest stats and population surveys for (and I'll just throw in two very different parts of the...
For Idaho - once you decide what part of the state you want to hunt in (terrain changes a lot from north to south) then look at the controlled hunts for that area, and see which ones gave a non-resident a decent chance of actually drawing the tag.
If you've already purchased your Idaho...
That's absolutely right. All I know is that a lot of estimates come in to play when IF&G finally posts the stats. How many guys go to buy their tags in October each year, and find that they can't buy their license because they didn't report? If it is a significant number, then you can see how...
Interesting.
Possibly related... I know that they have to use estimates, at least on a year to year basis. For instance, they might know that so many people bought the Boise River A-Tag. But what if only 70% of the hunters reported after the season? And what if they know that more than 70%...
