Been looking into putting in for a special gen tag for WY elk hunt but I'm trying to stay away from units that have any wilderness areas or at least those that have a lot of it. Anyone able to point me to a map were I can see the boundaries for wilderness areas. Best one I was able to find so far is this one below, but was hoping for something better. Been looking at units 98 & 28 so far but w/o knowing how much wilderness they have that may change. Thanks

Bought this and loaded to computer and was able to transfer it to the gps. It is a invaluable tool as NR hunter. I bought the one that is able to be viewed on the computer because it helped in the scouting process.

Thx, was hoping to find something free, I have a few things already to help w/scouting just need to know were the wilderness areas/boundaries are.

You can load these into GE and see the boundaries.

And it is free.

Thx, had found the same thing a few minutes after I made my post. Works great and is exactly what I was looking for.

A side question though, how accurate how the F&G designation for limited public access on units? Reason I ask is that elk unit 25 is about 80% public when I bring up the map on mytopo, but F&G has it as limited public access, but to me by looking at it on the topo map it looks like there'd be plenty of places to go in from. I also just noticed that when I look at the roughly the same area for deer, units 94 & 160 they are not marked as limited access.Which seems odd.

I spent about 14 working days of last summer in and around the BLM/Forest boundary of 98. I'm not an expert on that part of the country by any means but shoot me a PM if I can be of assistance.

That site has KMZ files that show the wilderness boundaries for all the states. Here is a link that will open the Wyoming file and show the 1:250,000 scale USGS topographic map.

To see similar maps for other states just change the value for the 'q' parameter in the above link.

Did you try contacting WY BLM (307-775-6256) http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/offices.html ? They have detailed maps showing all BLM, state, national forest, wilderness and private. The maps cost $4 each and are worth every cent. The agency may be able to guide your decision and you would probably only need two or three maps for those areas.

Also, study the area map at http://wgfd.wyo.gov/web2011/imgs/Elk_SummaryMap.pdf and notice the bottom footer which indicates “wilderness area”.

Hope this helps.

Just FYI. Unit 98 all the decent elk country in the northern part is Wilderness. I do not know if any of the south part of the unit holds elk. It is mostly High desert.

Check out MyTopo previews for a little more detail for free. http://www.mytopo.com
