Tanning Hides?

Just wondering how do some of you tann your hides. I am planning to tann my hides but I dont know what tanning method should I use. Any tips? Thanks

Chrome-Tanning is one of the very best methods. The basic process is cure, flesh, pickle, tan, oil, and soften. If you have never done any tanning, I would recommend a kit from a supplier like Van Dyke's Supply Co. It will include Oxalic Acid, Chromium Sulfate, and softening oil. You will also need salt.

Tanning costs are so high I planned on doing my spring bear hide but chickened out at the last minute after reading about it. I've prep'd lots of coyotes to sell but never done the actual tanning

I just tack the hide in my trophy room so I dont need the hide real soft - just need it to not spoil or slip the hair after time.

If I don't need a mount quality tan is it feasible to tan them yourself?

Or is it so much time and effort that a $300 tan is the best route?

Just trying to stretch my hunting budget. Any opions from those that have done it?

Enough for an elk hide is about $75 for 2 hide kits. 1 for deer.
