Silencers/Suppressors legal for hunting.....

Hmmm A 300 or 338 Whisper on a AR platform would make a hell of a 'long bow'.

If you keep velocities sub-sonic, its 'movie' quite. In a 22lr the sound of the firing pin is louder than the 'crack', a friggn BB gun makes more noise. Or thats what someone told me.

They have never been illegal to own, you just couldn't hunt big game with them. IIRC it takes a Class 3 dealer to sell you one, $200 fee per silencer and some serious back ground checks. Ohh and the law to pass

Correct in most states. Some states still ban NFA weapons. $200 fee, a trust, and a 3 month wait is usually the preferred method now.

Alternatively you can have your county law enforcment officer sign your ATF form 4 I beleive it is, take finger prints. $200 and 3 months later you get it.

Definetly somthing to research into before going into NFA, or you may just find yourself serving a 10 year prison sentence.

Those are super quiet. Ballistics really suffer though, and make them less than ideal for hunting. I would venture to say anyone opposed to them doesnt understand them and thinks there poacher tools. But really if anyone wants to poach a silencer law isn't going to stop them. Nor open the floodgates for illegal hunting.

I have half a dozen suppressors. the only ones that are hollywood quiet are the ones that are on my uzi and mp5 when using subsonic ammo. (9mm)

The ones on the 223 and 308 are quiet enough to not wear hearing protection while shooting.

Suppressors are only legal to own in 27 states. In Indiana we can not use them on any weapon to kill any animals.

Google silencer and poaching and see how many actual articles come up. They are definitely a great tool for poachers

I'd love to play with one,but don't kid yourself guys won't be poaching in mt with them.

I used to make silencers... Can't find the old specs... but they only work under certain "pressures"... and under limited muzzel velocities..... And yes you better have an ATF permit..

There isnt rampant poaching in other states that allow hunting with them. Regardless its not illegal to own one in MT and theres nothing stopping someone from bringing one into MT. If someone is going to commit the illegal act of poaching, I'm sure they dont care what else is illegal or not. And its not like everytime you run into a game officer they pat you down for hidden suppressors. You may very well be right that a poacher may use a suppressor, they also arent afraid to use rifles during archery season either.

why encourage the possession of silencers? why in general? Why use legislature resources on it now when times are tough?

Our most famous recent large poaching operating sting was the Ruth's who lived up and seeley and were poached obscene numbers of elk and deer using silencers and spotlights.

How can the hell can people not remember the Ruths (from Pennsylvania originally) got away with poaching at night for 10 years in part because of silencers? Otherwise their shots would have been heard in the seeley.

Also, poaching with a rifle during archery season would be a million times easier with a silencer wouldnt ya think.

You can bet it would have helped the boys over in HD 261 and the poached mule deer, I am with Rocky on this one. We will battle it.

To heck with Turner's I'm headed to the Snowies..

Don't you even think about it;) Those stands of ponderosa don't make for very good blowdown shots. On the other hand it would be nice to know that someone else was on the highway at 3 am in case I break down. Maybe we could carpool:) I do use a car so If you're going to look for a macho truck scene bringing home the rack You'll have get them taken with a Ford escort.

Ditto, Brundo.
I doubt any poacher is going to stop and say, "silencers are illegal, I better not use one".

This is the same problem I have with most gun control laws. The only people affected are the law abiders.

Thats like saying we should ban guns so people dont shoot anyone else again.

The only thing better would be if you said it was for the kids.

People that go through the trouble of owning legal suppressors are not using them to poach animals, and if they are they would do it anyway.

Suppressors on large bore rifles are not and will never be hollywood quiet.

The 2nd Amendment is not about hunting. Quit trying to push your opinion off on to the rest of us and making it harder for the law abiding citizens of the US.

I approve of this message

If you have a problem with silencers you should really look at what Jason Lee and xrayts have to say about it. They are right.

It is already illegal to poach an animal. The loosers that poach aren't going to follow the law anyway.

Dude this does nt effect you his is HB 174 in the MONTANA LEGISLATURE.

Sounds like they would be great for target shooting/plinking so as not to disturb the neighbors.

There have been a few gun ranges closed down around where i live in the past decade due to noise after people build subdivisions near a range and cry about it. If guns had silencers it would be pretty nice for range time! I think if the laws changed I would look at them just for the sake of saving my ears during hunting shots and target practice. But they would need to be light and not affect accuracy.
Silencers should only be illegal if your doing something illegal with them.

2nd amendment rights affect the entire nation. If your going to battle it, your going to need a better argument as well.

Bud, you need to read the bill, it does not make it illegal to own one. Has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment. Right now it is illegal to hunt big game with one, the bill makes it legal to hunt with one. That is the best argument I need.
