Just bought a Ruger 44 magnum carbine .I plan on hunting black bear over bait next year with it. I think it is plenty or black bear.

Should be Ok provided its under 100 yds. My grandpa use one for years in Minn.
for Deer and Bear hunting. It always worked out for him...

I know of more than a couple of porky pigs that thought it was just a bit too much ! I'd stay away from the 180's (good deer load though) and stick with 240's or 300's.

I shoot both 240 grain HP and 240 grain Flat Point. Both shoot well in my gun. Just bought some MAGTECH 240grain sp to try.

Here is a little report on how different ammo wil make a huge difference. I went to the range today to check out my Ruger 96 44 mag and try a few different brands of ammo. Thus far I had only used UMC 180's for Fla pigs. They did just fine, but remember my shots were in the 15-25 yds range.

25yd 50 yd 100yd (all 3 shot groups)

UMC180 JSP 3" 7" Didn't even try

Blazer 240 JSP Completely missed 8 1/2 x 11 paper @ 25yds

Win 240 JSP 3/4" 1 3/4" 2 1/2"

Amazing results. I'm glad I tried all three before I went afield.
