Open letter to Montana's legislators and Gov. Steve Bullock,
Montanans cherish public lands, and we relish passing on to our children and grandchildren the outdoor traditions that our public lands make possible, such as hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. Our outdoor heritage is at the core of who we are as Montanans, and an attack on our public lands is an attack on our way of life.
We are therefore firmly opposed to renewed attempts by the 2015 Legislature to seize our public lands under the guise of transferring ownership to the state. This effort is a direct attempt to privatize our public lands and sell them to the highest bidder, thereby shutting out every-day Montanans from recreating in our great outdoors.
At best, a transfer would increase the tax burden for residents as the state struggles with the hundreds of millions of dollars it would cost to manage the lands. At worst, the tax burden would result in the forced sale of public lands to the highest bidder and the eviction of Montana families from hunting, camping, and fishing areas.
The management of our public lands isn’t perfect. That’s why Montanans are already working neighbor-to-neighbor and arriving at realistic, working solutions for enhancing forest health, widening public access, and improving wildlife habitat.
We call on Montana's elected officials to oppose any legislative efforts to advance a land transfer. We call on our elected officials to work on real solutions for public lands that will not raise our taxes, inhibit our access, or deny Montana’s families our outdoor heritage.
