Natianoal forest trails across private land

I'm going on my first elk hunt in Montana this fall and am trying to find a good area to hunt. I keep finding checkerboard public and private with National forest trails crossing the private. How do I go about finding if the trail is open across the private? I cant find anything specific on the national forest website. Also, how do I find out if a two track road is public or private? Is there a state map or something that will show where they become private roads?

I've been in touch with a guy in Montana about that recently too. Find out the ranger district for your hunting area and fire off an email. Someone from the Rec and Trails crew will get in touch. They all seem super happy to help.
