Thinking of trying this area this coming fall (2014) for a first bull shot cows before but want to put down that first bull so won't be too fussy . Is this HD a good choice . FYI I'm fairly young and in decent shape , willing to put on a few miles . Any in put is welcome , thanks .

560

Hunted there last year 2013 was there for 20 days. There was two of us and we did not see a single elk. Good area for deer though we got a nice Mule deer and a really nice whitetail. I worked out all spring and summer to be in top shape put lots of miles on I mean lots. There were days I walk from 630 am and didn't get back to camp till close to midnight and would cut maybe one track that would look old...... Suggestions try and get special permit for bull in 520. Or have someone horseback you in?.........sorry for bad news and good luck....... I myself will be going back to mt but we will be trying a different area.....thinking higher altitude..........but on the plus side it was an awesome trip and can't wait for next year.

Thanks for the honesty - I've been hunting muleys for years in 426 but that's a hard breaks HD to draw a permit . Just looking for any info on a place for a first bull . Thanks guys

No I live in western minnesota but have friends in HD 426 - always come out for a week - ten days - I'd do anything within legal means for a bull that how bad I want one just flying blind as to where what HD might give me a chance - like I said any legal bull would be a trophy to me

The bull in this OYOA Season One episode was shot in Unit 560. Thanks to Lawnboy's talent a bull was taken on film. As you can see, where the elk were hanging out, it was a steep muther.

As you can see, being able to navigate the public/private interface is very helpful to success in this unit. I wouldn't hunt it without a map chip from Hunting GPS Maps. And I would be in really good shape and be ready to pack one out in many pieces.

Ok maybe later season would be best - maybe be at the lower elevations and closer to public /private lines

448 is a good area. Thats where I got my bull this year.Unit 420 is right next to it. You do need a draw tag for the 420 game range but the elk move back and forth all the time.

MT , would you suggest later in the season or closer to opener for 448 . Thanks

I really couldn't point you either way. The elk move through it all season. If I had to choose I wouldn't do opener. It gets pounded unless you have a specific elk pegged.
