What is the difference between the 2 archery seasons for deer/elk in Montana?

I see a 6 week archery season and then a "Backcountry (HD's 150, 151, 280, 316)" 1 week season.

I think what you're seeing are the wilderness early rifle areas. Archery is so short there because it opens up for rifle. Pretty sure anyway, if memory serves 316 is the Absaroka Beartooth wilderness and 280 is the Bob. Not 100% sure about that have to go look it up.

You are correct, these are the units with early wilderness rifle hunts. You can still bow hunt, you just have to wear hunter orange.
