I'm putting the finishing touches on a dozen maple shafts for our elk hunt in Colorado. I previously built a half dozen for my son and after three years of shooting pigs and deer he still has three that have not been snapped by the animals rolling over on them. They are pretty heavy compared to cedar. I'm hoping they will do the job if I get a shot from my Bob Lee Signature recurve. I'll tip them with Magnus 135 gr heads, I've had pretty good luck with those. Does anyone else still shoot woodies or am I the only one that hasn't switched to carghon?

Never tried Maple, mostly Port Orford cedar for me and the youngest son.
He tried a batch of spruce that he bought at Trad Out in Lewistown this past season and they worked out just fine. I have long been a fan of wood arrows and their durability.
The wife and eldest shoot alum and carbon, no regrets there either for that matter.
Main thing for us is having some good sharp Zwickey's on the front of those shafts!

Good luck on the elk this season.
