I don't remember this product being discussed before. I saw it on TV for the first time today and it seems like a pretty handy unit. It works off the iridium satellite system, and allows text messaging back and forth to home, plus SOS, plus GPS. What's anybody's take on it? Seems like a lot better deal than a sat phone and would keep momma back home happier to be able to keep in touch when I don't have cell service.

Looks sweet! I wonder two things though.. 1)yearly subscription cost? 2) compatability with HuntingGPSmaps

Those are old prices...they seem to be more expensive now at the bigger places like Bass Pro Shop...Amazon still has them for 249 with free shipping. But I believe it's an older style model

Edit: Yes, it is 2 different models. The review in the link is an older model for $249. The newer model (SE) that I linked is $299 everywhere I looked.

Thanks for the review link. We will likely get the InReach, since our main purpose is to check in with family a couple times during the week.

John, I remembered it becuz I was in the market also. I missed out on my daughters Homecoming court coronation because of my long planned and unflexible hunt dates. Felt like a total azz, it was one long day of hunting with my mind elsewhere, sure would have been nice to text her from the mountains.

I agree. I want to keep in touch with the old lady since she'll be watching the dogs while I'm gone, plus I talk to my sons every night and don't want to give that up on hunting trips. Texting is better than no contact. My girlfriend worries about me hunting with no cell service, especially where there are bears...lol

I haven't' looked at these in a while so I thought I would check them out and see what the reviews look like.

On Amazon the first one to come up has 69 reviews. 16 of those gave it a 1 or 2 stars. Not good.

Any product with about 25% of owners not satisfied with the performance of the product is a huge red flag to me. Not to mention that when you life is on the line you want a product that is dependable. Read the reviews and decide if it is what you want your life to depend on in an emergency.
