We have Been hunting a large lake for divers mallards and geese. Has anyone had any luck with big water? We are going At it again this weekend I hope it's a little better.
I love hunting big water!! I throw 8 doz duck decoys and 20 or so honker decoys. i watch the weater and only hunt if the wind is going to be in my face and over 15 mph. These pics are form last year not big water but still had a blast. We had over 2000 duck in the decoys during our 4 hr hunt. We would only shoot 1 duck per flock to keep form going home to early.
Mulie, I'm with you I love to hunt bigger water, and wind is needed to make it work. I just gotta get brave enough to play on the river when it's cold, I don't have a lot of time on this river, and the birds just aren't worth tipping one over.
We hunt big water and layout shoot for the divers. I have found in our area you need to stay away from the shoreline. Once the banging starts the birds get really smart and we see the flights a coulple of miles out. I usually mix Bluebills and Canvasbacks; 50 to 60 birds will work, for me i really like to set a J-hook pattern with the first bird 60 to 70 yards from the inside of the hook. We also have done pretty good by finding water we can stand in and hunt right in the middle of the decoys.
