Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Annual elk rifle thread

I still have my 06 also. Killed my first elk at 12 years old with that rifle and probably the next 20 or so before I started needing more gun. Not sure why, but it sure has been fun.
After using my 270 for 20ish years I decided to go bigger too. Haven't used it this year, but this has been my go to for elk the last half dozen years or so. CZ 550, 9.3x62mm, shooting either 232gr Norma Oryx or 250gr Nosler Accubonds.

Been carrying a Rem 700 30-06 shooting 168 gr ttsx. But no elk have been harmed by it.

It is the first gun I shot a deer with 22 yrs ago in MN. Spent a lot of time sitting in the corner of the milkhouse of the dairy barn. Had a lot of rust but had it cerakoted and new stock 2 yrs ago so looks pretty good now. Can't find a pic though.

Well clearly I need to take more pictures, just never have done it. Spikes from this year, happy for the meat. The Jarrett is awful plain Jane. It simply works well and is a true 1/2 moa rifle. This year my elk was right at 400, quartered away moving with the herd. I simply have a lot of confidence in the rifle and how well I shoot it, it’s inherent accuracy and the effectiveness of 250 grain accubonds at nearly 3000fps.
I screw around deer hunting, often taking two or three of my number 1s to camp. None of which I’ll push past about 350 yards. I’ll hunt a different rifle every day. It’s different with elk, serious business for me. The Jarrett, since I had it built, always gets the nod.
If I draw a B tag in Montana next year I’ll probably take the 300 H&H and the 275 Rigby, just for grins.

I’m only a one rifle guy currently and a relatively new rifle hunter. I have a Howa .308 that i have hunting with for 4 seasons and have taken 8 whitetail and 2 elk with it. Started out using 165gr. Accubonds and have switched over to 168gr federal premium Berger hybrids. I picked a Leupold VX3-I 4.5 x 14 from Schmalts. I don’t have much to compare it to but like the fact I can go to the range and shoot as much as I want without getting beat up from recoil.

Kimber Montana 84L in 280 Ackley Improved shooting 160gr accubonds. I added a Thunderbeast 7 suppressor last year. I’ve had the rifle about 10 years. It’s in the teens on dead elk when I add up all the elk killed with it by my family.

Remington 700 BDL in .300 Win Mag. Purchased by my father’s best hunting buddy in the mid 60’s. Given to me about 15 years ago with orders to kill something with it before he passed. I have : elk, caribou, and Whitetails. He’s still alive and lives his hunting days through me now.

How did you get the suppressor on there I thought those barrels were too thin?

Winchester model 70 rebarreled to 6.5 SAUM with a McMillan game warden stock and a bunch of other mods shooting 156 berger elite hunters has been my go to for a couple years now, I'm at 4 elk with it, probably another 4 for friends, super reliable, super easy to shoot.

My elk gun is a Rem. 7mm mag ADL topped with a Leupold VX-II 2x7 both bought in about 1980. I've shot 1 bull and 4 cow elk, a handful of antelope and countless mule deer. 99.9% of them have been shot with factory ammo in either 150 or 175 grain Core-lokt.
The rifle has never let me down when I do my part. I know it's gonna outlive me for sure, then it will belong to my son.
