Alright, I think the decision has been made. I am going to hopefully put together a Wyoming Pronghorn hunt this year (was going to DIY Elk). Though my wife does not know of this plan... or the previous elk plan... lol. As they say... better to ask for forgiveness then permission right! That being said, I am planning this out and need a little help. I am not the type that is going to ask everyone what I should do and where to go, I am trying to do my own research. I am having a little bit of trouble understanding some of the numbers on the Fish and Game Website though. (I am from Indiana so the idea of public land is foreign to me lol).
My intention is this:
Go to Wyoming, with a buddy (or solo if i have to). I would love to put a buck and maybe a doe down to put some meat in the freezer. I do not need a Boon and Crockett buck. I to conservation oriented to shoot something that is immature, but at the same time, I do not need a trophy. I want to go out, have a blast, put some meat in the freezer, and create some memories. I have never been to Wyoming so I am not sure this is even a possibility, but I would love to maybe find public property, set up a camp, and hunt/hike/photograph/etc for a week... or at least a few days.
That being said, I have been looking at the Wyoming Fish and Game site and was sort of looking at units 60, 61, and 64. Reason being, the abundance of what appears to be BLM land/state land. I believe the BLM land is all yellow with random squares of what I believe to be state land/water? (can't tell on my computer since the colors are sooooo close). My next step was to look at the draw numbers. It appears the units all have a "quota" of 0 or 3. The next stat says the 1st choice applicants were 374, 306, and 156 respectively. I am assuming this means that it is pretty close a sure draw? I am not sure what the quota of 0 or 3 means?
With the above information, am I falling into a pitfall? Is this a big mistake or am I going to travel out there and not see a single thing? I can't seem to find how long the hunting season lasts, but seems to open in early September. If these units are applicable, I am not opposed to maybe waiting for a second or 3 week to maybe bypass some of the "opening week" activity. Not sure if that makes sense or is just Indiana logic applied to the wrong type of hunting lol.
Anyhow, any advice, sounds great, you don't want to do that, etc would be greatly appreciated! This is my first "out west" hunt and whether my buddies jump on board or not... at this point is irrelevant. Although if they do, I see you can apply as a group... which is pretty cool!
Thanks again!
