    Gaiters

My question is how noisy are gaiters while wearing them? I'm on the 'gaiter fence' but after a wet week of archery hunting then a snowy week of rifle hunting I'm ready to jump too. I was leaning toward the Kennetrek but I've been impressed with the couple of First Lite garments I have and...

Boulder CO planners endorse limited public elk hunting on their open space

Although I'm a transplant to Colorado from the midwest it has been almost 20 years now, half of my life give or take has been here in Boulder county. I'm an avid hunter but also a frequent user of the city and county open space when it comes to day hiking and mountain biking. My main concern...

    Help with a Hunting Truck

I have to take you to task on the weak tranny in the fords. I have a 2000 f350 with a 7.3 and I'm running an assortment of engine mods to boost the power up. It's faster (empty) than my Audi wagon! I tow a lot of heavy trailers too. Almost daily. Never had trans issues and I'm at 255k on the...

Every state as a guy in a bar

The Colorado makes me laugh. Definitely that Boulder stereotype. (or replace with any fancy schmnacy mountain town like Aspen, Telluride, ...) Good thing there are so many of this type in Colorado. They hire guys like me to work on their expensive homes and properties. Affording me the means to...

    Dehydrating Food

One of my favorites lately has been dehydrated ground elk with some veggies (corn, green beans, peas, ect.) and I cook it with instant mashed potatoes. Back country shepherds pie! Gotta look out for those peas tho, those make some tooth breaking pea gravel if you aren't careful. My girlfriend...

    Sleeping bag recommendations?

I use a Mountain Hardware Ratio 15 degree bag. I've been really happy with it. This fall I bought a Sea to Summit Reactor fleece liner for my bag. We were going on a late season hunt and I didn't want to pop for a 0 or -15 degree bag so this was my $75 fix and I was remarkably happy with it. In...

CO Wolf Reintroduction efforts, from RMEF

I'm not crazy about the reintroduction of them in Colorado but I wouldn't be surprised if some naturally made their way south from Wyoming sometime in the foreseeable future. I know there have been a sighting or two, even one confirmed by DOW here in Colorado if I'm not mistaken. But I mean a...

    Big hunt big questions

You can hunt Wyoming without a guide, just not in a wilderness area. I'm not 100% positive on this but I believe you can hunt wilderness in WY with a resident, they don't have to be a guide. I'm sure someone on the forum can confirm or deny this. Colorado has OTC elk tags for both archery and...

Need advice for 79 yr old father-in-law, my hunting buddy

I wouldn't recommend unit 20. There is a lot of private land and it's proximity to the front range metropolis means there are a lot more recreational users in this forest. I live in the boulder area and cut my teeth in unit 20 but that was a number of years ago now. I haven't hunted it in 10...

    To Heavy for Day Hunt?

My typical daypack is similar to most on this list. I'm probably in the 30# range but I've never really weighed it. It does change some day to day depending on the plan for that particular day, weather, ect. I always start with a FULL 3L of water. That's one area I refuse to skimp is on the...

How do cattle herds effect elk population?

Very interesting feedback. Thanks all! I think in the future if I come across an area that looks like promising elk country but has been hammered by recent cattle grazing I will probably look for other spots to hunt if at all possible. But who knows, the could have been a ton of elk right there...

How do cattle herds effect elk population?

Damn that's a great point right there. Maybe a better question for me to have asked in my first post would have been the following. If while scouting you come across cattle grazing a particular area would that turn you away from hunting that area?

How do cattle herds effect elk population?

I've been curious about this for some time now and have yet to find a definitive answer. Probably because there isn't one... but maybe it will make for some spirited debate. I hunted an area during muzzle loader season this past fall in Colorado where there had clearly been a large cattle...

    Found?

My dad once found a pair of Swaro 10x42's on an elk hunt. We were camped in a place that had obviously been camped in before but he was out gathering firewood when he found them. My hunting buddy's response was 'why don't you go back over there and look around some more, there might be a...

    Ground shooting grouse

I too have taken grouse with a rock. There is definitely something very caveman-esque about procuring a meal in the wild without the use of a weapon. And they taste a little better too I think.

Howdy from the increasingly crowded Colorado front range.

Boone County, north of Columbia is where I grew up. I don't get back there to hunt deer and turkey as much as I would like. But the hunting here doesn't suck!

Howdy from the increasingly crowded Colorado front range.

I think that's been a contributing factor over the last 4-5 years, however long it's been legal. But this place was growing awfully quickly in the decade or so leading up to that as well. It will be interesting to see if the novelty factor of legal weed starts wearing off as more and more states...
