    Hows your workouts goin?

I lift light (avoiding injury) until muscle failure everyother day (minimum). And do HIIT on days I lift to finish it off. I will be heading straight to the woods when I get back from my involuntary journey abroad, much to the dismay of the spouse. I started a ketogenic diet in January and I'm...

Colorado otc archery for a solo beginner.

Get the numbers for some outfitters/packers in the area. They usually aren't out yet in archery season, but they will drive some horses up and haul you out if you need help. I packed in 5.1 miles, and set up shop. It snowed 3 feet the day I shot my elk, and got one trip out before my leisurely...

    If you could live anywhere???

Thanks for the input guys. I've got some time to figure it out. And yes, with Alaska as my standard, it will be hard to beat.

    If you could live anywhere???

Well, I've already got my 1 ton and camper, but the kids still need to got to school for a few years (9). But that's a possibility down the road. After stewing for a week, I don't think Alaska's negatives outweigh the possitives. That place is just too wild. And with all of the Alaska reality...

Fly in frank church wilderness elk/deer hunt

Wilderness Areas have to be flown over by 2000ft per FAA FLIP, but there are some lower minimums and exemptions as listed above. The good thing is, that in the Frank 2000ft above, could mean that you are only 500ft horizontally from what you want to look at. I too am hunting the Frank this...

    If you could live anywhere???

Born and raised in WA (and I've ruled that out). I was stationed at JBER for 6 years, and have been trying to get back. I still own my house in Wasilla, and plan on building another in the Valley. Nothing compares to AK, and I plan on moving back in a couple of years. But, I don't want to factor...

    If you could live anywhere???

I have an opportunity here in the not too distant future to retire. I am a resident of Alaska, so that has been high on my list. Having a family has recently brought other factors into my decision making as the day gets closer and closer. Outdoor activities are at the top of my list of factors...

    Preparing for altitude

Well, you won't notice much. There are different stages of hypoxia (which is what you're referring to), and at that elevation, you will be in the "indifferent stage" it will be the equivalent of smoking a cigarette or having a beer physiologically. No, you wont be drunk, but you will have less...

    topo maps

I have been looking for that WapitiBob since I switched computers. I have been using USGS TopoView. It's a major PITA to get the maps, but I do like how they Have GeoJPG, So you can pull them up on your smart phone or tablet, and get an icon on the map of where you actually are. Neat feature...

    BackCountry Elk Pack

I used mine too for the longest time. SO comfortable, but I gave in to something more lightweight (Kuiu- some people don't like them, but I have nothing but good things to say. Mine fits me well, and performs as it did the day I bought it). I still bring it for a spare, or for when I need help...

    Hunting with a knee injury?

I tore my ACL in 2011 at the age of 30. I got an Ossür CTS carbon fiber brace (one of the few braces rated for use in saltwater). I hunted Turkey with just the brace prior to surgery, and archery hunted after surgery for the next two seasons. I opted for the patellar graft option, as I am still...

    Anyone still carry hatchets

I have the Gerber Camp Axe too. I think it's 9 or 10" for long pack trips, and the SOG Badaxe with a saw in the handle for car camping/hunting. That little Gerber is a lot packed into that small package.

    Spotting Scope cover?

I am looking for the same thing. A leave-on cover. I found some Kowa ones that may fit the angled Vortex Viper HD, but may end up making my own out of treated Cordura. The military taught me to sew believe it or not. Will sketch it up and make it if I get the time. Will post pics or blog it up...

    Early Sept. Hunting Clothing

I wear my Sitka Ascent pants and lightweight Core hoody, or Kuiu Tiburon Pants and Shirt in Northern Colorado at 9000-11000ft during September. It is usually pretty hot, but I always brought my 90% Jacket and Pants for the crisp mornings and cold snaps. Towards the end of the month I might be in...

WTB a "Puffy jacket" as well as any other light to mid-weight gear.

There are some buy/sell/trade groups on facebook for high quality used hunting gear (Sitka, Kuiu, First Lite, etc.) although sometimes they ask full retail. One of my favorite puffy coats is actually a Primaloft model that Cabela's introduced a couple of years back, though I don't see it on...
