Oddball Question - Returning NR Combo License

Hey gang - I drew my Montana NR combo this year, but it turns out I am not going to be able to make the trip due to some family commitments. When I called MTFWP about returning my license I was told "Drop it in the mail with a letter of explanation", which frightened me a bit. Are they looking...

Montana. Should I buy a point for elk?

I suppose it depends entirely upon your desire to hunt a limited entry unit one day. A cursory review of Gohunt.com shows there are a handful of units that have decent draw odds for the rifle hunt once you get to 5 points. It would take a bit more digging to see what the public land status is in...

David Allen out as RMEF CEO

Thanks for all you do, Randy and thanks for jumping in on the conversation as well! I hope your season is off to a great start!

I'm curious why you feel that way?

David Allen out as RMEF CEO

I think David Allen did some amazing things with the Elk Foundation. I talked to someone today who is close to what's going on and even he was surprised by the change, so who knows what inner working led to his ouster. Either way I'll hope that things continue in a positive direction because...

David Allen out as RMEF CEO

I'm with you. I don't imagine Randy has any inclination to take on the task of being RMEF CEO. It's just an interesting idea because of the masses he has the ability to connect with.

Wolf Encounter - 20 yards WY

What an experience! My buddy Mike and I had a group of them follow us for a while in Idaho a few years back. It was pretty amazing, although they never got as close as that! Thanks for posting that video!!

David Allen out as RMEF CEO

I'm voting for Newberg as the new CEO!!! Who's with me? In all honesty I'm a bit shocked and will be curious to see what happens next.

    Western States Fires Altering Plans?

The Lolo Peak fire is wrecking my plans to hunt Idaho ahead of Montana. The National Forest Closure currently surrounds an area I have hunted quite a bit and was planning to this year.

    onXmaps Fire Info

I wasn't aware of that site. I'll check it out as well! Thanks for posting.

    onXmaps Fire Info

Has anyone else noticed that current wildfire info doesn't display on the web app when you click on a highlighted area, but it does work on the iPhone or iPad app? I wonder what's causing that little problem?

    Big Belt Grizzlies

Sage advice! I've spoken with the biologist in the area and his advice was to "assume there are a few around". I don't imagine the numbers are anywhere near what they are is SW Montana, but we'll still prepare accordingly!

    Big Belt Grizzlies

I heard about the latest mauling yesterday. Frightening stuff indeed. We'll keep our heads on a swivel and hopefully won't even see one...at least not up close and personal!

    MT HD 327 Advice

    1. There are good numbers of elk in that HD. 2. Elk hunting always depends on weather. Find your spots and stick with them. 3. It may, but I wouldn't make it a prime consideration. 4. I think a good rule of thumb is one we all tend to abide by - get at least a mile away form roads and trails. 5...

Montana Next Year--guidance needed figuring out the system there

Montana isn't as difficult as you're making it out to be. If you want the elk/deer combo, that's what you apply for. This year all of the elk/deer combos were awarded in the draw, meaning odds of drawing were not 100% as they have been for many years recently. I didn't draw but was able to...

    Big Belt Grizzlies

That's what was interesting about the news story. The biologist - who I reached out to for some elk info prior to seeing the bear story - said he was surprised it had taken so long for one to be spotted in the Big Belts. I've hunted in grizzly country in Alaska and that was a bit unnerving at...

    Colorado Unit 75 help!

That looks like some pretty gnarly and open country. Looks like it may have burned at one time because of all the deadfall in the satellite photos. I don't know the area, but like any archery season you're going to have to cover some miles. Practice your calls and be prepared for a grunt of a...

Trying to make sense of my scouting trip

I've archery hunted Colorado before and most of those buggers were just above the tree line when the season opened. Shortly after they were no longer above the tree line. They bailed down into a wilderness area that was very difficult to get in to. At the same time I saw a herd of cows with a...

    Big Belt Grizzlies

Myself and two buddies will be elk hunting the Big Belts and I saw a recent news story from White Sulphur that talked about a young grizzly caught on FWP trail cams somewhere in the Big Belts (I believe northern half). Have any of you who have hunted the area ever run into them? I'm not...
