I haven't met him personally but I've heard that Tyler Sims gets some big elk out of that region. His outfitting operation is based out of Arlington. I'll bet that easy big elk will cost you big dollars though.
All of the units you listed have plenty of elk. The only unit I haven't spent a lot of time in is Unit 12. Given the list you provided I'd personally choose to hunt in the following order: 110, 10, 9, 12. Unit 12 could be a great unit but I just haven't spent a lot of time there. The only unit...
I filled my 7-7 this past Friday and helped another hunter fill a tag on New Year's day. There are plenty of elk on the public, but the larger herds are very wary of hunters at this point in the season. Smaller groups of bulls are scattered around and if you are lucky they could have a cow or...
I've applied there recently but I haven't drawn a tag yet. When I was looking for information I spoke to a biologist named Bart. I'd try the WYGF office in Cody.
I know Buzz posted about this in the Wyoming forum but I'm not sure it was brought up here. It looks like the fees for nonresidents are jumping up to $690 next year. Here's a link to the WY Game and Fish fee increase...
I normally keep the gazetteer in the truck and carry a FS map and a couple of printouts of my hunt area. One with aerial imagery and one with topo, both in gallon ziplocs. The following link can get you the most up to date georeferenced maps...
I'm out by the X Bar HMA pretty often and I haven't seen any elk out there. That doesn't mean they aren't there but I do see them in the Big Hollow area a little more north and east of there. They are probably passing through the x bar I just haven't ever caught them there. I believe the west...
Along with the recommendations above I would bring a lightweight merino wool top and bottom as a baselayer. Wool is a great insulator and doesn't stink nearly as bad as the synthetic options out there after day 4 or 5. You can spend a lot or not depending on the brand. I've been happy with a top...
It looks like you have got some great advice already, but I'd like to point out that during my first two seasons DIY elk hunting in Colorado I learned more by screwing it up than I did the following year that I was successful in Wyoming. I'm a big believer in DIY because I think you benefit more...
I also recommend the Phelps calls for narrow mouths. I only recently started experimenting with diaphragm calls and the smaller Phelps calls fit better than the Primos calls I tried. Maybe if you trimmed the calls as jims mentioned above you could save some cash.
I thought the nonresident guide rule was a load of crap, then I moved to Wyoming and magically my perspective changed. Sure it sucks for nonresidents, but as resident I am looking forward to hunting the wilderness areas near me with a higher percentage of resident hunters, and there is a ton of...
I just moved to Laramie, and I've never hunted in that area but I'll probably be scouting around in the vicinity once the snow comes off. If you remember, message me later on in the year and I'd be happy to pass on any info I gather.
