I had good success with H1000 and 180 grain bullets of several makes. I would suspect shooter error or bedding problems. Is there any pattern to the groups? Horizontal stringing? Vertical? Random?
Matt,
Over the past several years I have seen reports of Howa 1500's in 6.5x55 not shooting accurately. Blame has gone to rate of twist in barrel, over long chambers, and several other possible culprits. There have been claims that you guys knew/know about the problem and have either fixed it...
I have a Howa Ranchland in .223. Nice rifle, but seems heavy considering the short slender barrel. Can a stock change help lighten this rifle? This model doesn't seem to get much publicity, so wonder if the weight puts folks off?
Agree with Schaaf. Cheap optics will give you a headache in more ways than one. I have hunted Wyoming several times with 7 power binoculars. In the clear air up there quality optics will serve much better than magnification (really true anywhere).
I have owned a 7mag and currently own a .300 Win mag. I rarely shoot/shot either. For most hunting the 7-08, 30-06, or similar will handle all my needs with less recoil and noise. I have seen my dad kill an Antelope at 550+ yards with a .25-06, so know for a fact that you don't really need a...
If you ever decide to try Antelope in Wyoming, I would enjoy getting together with you. I am also in Texas and find the "hunting" here to be somewhat less than satisfying. I am retired and on fixed income, so my hunting would be doe tags, which is fine as we only eat game for red meat. I used to...
Hi,
Saw this post and it brought back some memories. In the mid 90's my dad, brother and usually some friends hunted west of Laramie (think it was area 44). It was on a ranch owned by the Miller family and include the mountain with the grave visible from the Interstate. After they sold the...
The Contender frame Either original or G2) with a 21" or 23" carbine barrel and rifle stock makes a short, light handy package that is a lot easier to shoot than the pistol. You can get barrels in .223, 7x30 Waters, 30-30, and probably a few more that offer factory ammunition with enough punch...
I would call the chamber of commerce in town's in that unit and ask if they have any lists of ranchers allowing hunting. They may have, or have information on where to get some names.
I shot a couple of Wyoming does this year with a .223 using Nosler 64 grain bonded bullet. Both shot thru shoulders and went down right there. I can't fault performance, but still feel that 6mm would be a better starting place. I have used .25-06, 6.5x55 and .30-06 in the past with no...
How has your hunting gone? Been a slow year so far for me (over here between Dallas and Tyler). Just can't seem to get everything working, as either the camera has gone bad, feeder quit , or I haven't had the chance to get out> Now, we are a bit on the wet side, but I still hope to get out in...
Due to back problems, I shoot a crossbow rather than vertical. I have tried several different arrows for the xbow including Black Eagle. They make a good arrow from what I can tell. I have settled on Deer Crossing arrows. They are made by the guy who used to run Victory, and seem every bit as...
I would call the game warden for the area that has leftover tags and see if he can recommend a ranch that might let your girls come out and shoot a goat. I understand that they are more likely to let you shoot does for a smaller fee and especially after opening weekend.
