Bull of a lifetime, hunt of a lifetime

Tough to beat camping in the Bob, let alone taking a bull of that caliber. Congrats! That's the country that convinced me to move to Montana- probably my favorite place on earth.

    Handheld GPS

I run the GSPMAP64st and have been very happy with it. They make a newer model that incorporates the InReach technology, I think its the GPSMAP66i.

    Spring bear in Montana

Same boat as Greenhorn here... In the Bozeman area, and although I'm starting to hear reports of bear activity here and there, it will probably be a while until it gets really good. Most places I hunt are still under a considerable amount of snow, with more on the way.

Proposed lease: State Land near Belgrade, MT

Good afternoon, Wanted to pass on this little tidbit of info for those in Gallatin County, especially the Bozeman/Belgrade area. The state is proposing to reallocate some state land, currently listed as grazing lease, north of the airport, adjacent to Ryen Glenn subdivision, for lease as a...

    Leupold vs Vortex

I own several Leupold and Vortex scopes. Specifically, I own 2 Viper HSLR4-16x44 and a plethora of Leupy's with my latest being a vx3i 4-14x40 CDS-SF. I'll compare those scopes as they list for similar price ranges. The Vortex is a great scope, clear glass- even at low light, and it doesn't...

Do you carry a pistol while Bowhunting?

Handgun on my belt, bear spray on my pack's hip belt. I've never needed either, but I don't want to be out there without them. Running into a grizzly while hiking into the backcountry alone in the dark or while quartering an animal, and not-so-nice 2 legged critters are all possibilities. I...

    Mile High Elk Club???

I've never had an issue traveling with meat. Brought a bear back to PA from MT in two coolers wrapped in duct tape, and brought a whitetail back from PA to MT the same way. Frozen meat, no ice. Was just as frozen when I got home as when I left.

Awesome public land bear hunt and trichinosis question

Pretty much covered above. Cook it well and enjoy. I wouldn't bother getting it tested. Try different things like ham, bacon, or sausage. I just treat it like pork. BTW, bear meat is some of the most sought-after in our house. Congrats!!

    Bear: Shot Placement

+1 on this. I've always thumped them right through the shoulders with the rifle and they've gone nowhere.

    How many guys bowhunt Antelope?

It's my favorite way to hunt them. It is definitely a game of numbers, as you will put in a lot of stalks per shot opportunity. Get a decoy, and you'll never want to hunt them another way!

    Bear down!!

    Nice job!

    If you could.........

I was just having this same conversation with myself... I can tell you the mountains around Bozeman got snow, but the weather towards the end of the week tells me we might have some good hunting Saturday.

    Sleeping Pad Recommendations

I run the Thermarest Neo-Air X-Therm. Its warm enough, I don't find a need to add a foam pad at all in the winter. Great pad and worth the price!
