My advice for him would to apply for a black hill any white-tail tag and also choose a west river unit to start building points. There are usually west river units with left over antler less tags if he wants to hunt this fall and drawing a left over tag does not burn your points. Dont be afraid... -

SD West River Deer
I would watch spring weather in western SD most of it is in drought. Disease seems to always be a problem with our west river herds when in drought. This might not be a good year to plan coming to SD. -

in SD I apply for Any Deer tags. With children my hunting is limited so I hunt for a buck to maximize my time afield. But have no qualms about shooting a doe on my last couple of days. -

Less than 50 days away...Black Hills!!!
Just spent 3 days trying to get my daughters doe tag punched. She didn’t get a deer just due to her being 11 and trying to find deer in her scope. We had a wonderful time and an seen plenty of deer. My dad lives out there and behind his house virtually has no public access with out trespassing... -

Just spent Saturday the 17-Saturday the 24 hunting. Didn’t manage to shoot an elk but got into them several mornings. Of course my brother who was along with out a tag could have shot several bulls. I either had trees in the way or wind give me away. Had a great time and felt it was a success... -
