  • Thanks Steve! That's good to hear about the roads! So I am guessing you have hunted both states would you recommend Colorado over Montana? As far as in shape I feel like I stay in shape but have been working on getting in better shape for mountains since I am a flat lander. I bought a pair of Kennetrek mountain extreme 400's so I am working on getting those good and broke in. I also have a badlands 2200 pack for mule deer hunting over here in SD. Will that pack work for elk or should I do something different? I am hoping to start running with some weight in the pack to be prepared for packing an elk out if I get lucky.
on a normal year the roads are not bad, no grizzlies that I know of. we take tire chains just in case of bad weather. you will have to choose second or third rifle season, In my opinion I would take second. I lived in Montana a few years and I will say this that grizzlies are unpredictable, The next problem is whether you are in shape for it, packing out an elk on your back is a major chore,I can put you in some good elk areas, ttyl, Steve
I plan on using rifle I do a lot of archery hunting but just don't feel confident with it on elk until I have hunted them before. Few questions I am wondering right off the bat is with Colorado if I remember right the season is late in the year. How are the roads during that time? A few of the guys on the forum told me to stay mobile my first year and I really have not been in the mountains that time of year. Also I am a little worried about grizzly bears is there any in that area? I am tryin to pick between montana and Colorado and what I have read is there is more elk in Colorado but better trophy quality in Montana. But it looks like I am going to have to deal with grizzlies for sure in Montana
Where do you want to start ? I know some places around the Durango Colorado area that are good. What do you plan on hunting with ? I personally have only hunted with a rifle or muzzleloader, but I have taken lots of elk. Let me know what you have in mind. ttyl, Steve
Let me know if you want some help, I`ll try to steer you in the right direction, Steve
