Haven't found a monster buck to chase yet (or maybe I'm just not telling), but the antler growth on bucks around here looks pretty good. The first two photos are from back in July. The rest are from last weekend.

I'm excited for the season because I get to take my 12 year old son on his first deer hunt. A first buck is a trophy regardless of what is sprouting from his head. These bucks can all be hunted with an over-the-counter tag and there are plenty of hunters, like my son, that will get started with trophies that look like this.
Would I shoot one of these bucks? It really depends on the situation. I've passed bucks bigger than anything in the photos, but there were times that I was hungry enough to shoot any of them. This year I will be elk hunting when most of these bucks encounter their first hunters. If I come back with an elk, it will take something extraordinary for me to drop the hammer on a buck. I do enjoy venison, so if my freezer is empty I am practical enough to realize that the younger bucks taste a whole lot better.
