Imagine your working a timbered slope for elk in the afternoon (still hunting general season). You come across a small park with a small pond and make a wide circle around it looking for sign. You discover that it has plenty of fresh elk sign and decide you would like to hunt the pond till the end of legal shooting light. You conceal yourself just inside the treeline with the breeze in your face coming from where you expect the elk to show from (Any scent created going forward is no longer a concern as the approaching elk won't cross your scent cone).

My question is how long is any sent you left while inspecting the area a concern? Does it linger on the ground and vegetation for some time or is it carried off on the thermals/breeze etc. as quickly as you left?

45 minutes tops in drier weather! Wet weather can double or even triple that time!
