Looking for some relatively cheap earplugs that I can just pop in once i see an animal without having to wait for those really cheap ones to expand or without having to carry a huge pair around... any suggestions?

trying to save what I have left in these tinitus riddled ear drums

Are the plugs still effective without using the entire band? Would hate for the band to get in the way with an elk standing there.

If you wanted something a bit more functional, you could try these...

They are a bit more expensive, but surefire figured how to make ear plugs that will only significantly reduce noise over 85 DB. If you leave the center plug open, it will allow lower decibel noise through while blocking damaging noise. I have a good friend that uses these with a .338 Lapua with a very obnoxious break. Seems to do the trick, and we can still talk the while he is setting up.

Other than that, I use something like these.

Messing around with ear plugs could have lost me a critter or two over the years. mtmuley

Better than your hearing, but I can't think of an animal that I've lost from them in a dozen years. It only takes a second to put them in if you have good ones. Mine are custom and really quick to put in - I talked about them here: http://onyourownadventures.com/hunttalk/showthread.php?t=256206

It's one thing I wish people would use more but everyone seems deaf to my advice  :D

I'm not deaf, and don't think earplugs are needed for big game, unless maybe using a braked rifle. I like to hear what is going on around me. To each his own I guess. mtmuley
