I was lucky enough to beat the odds and drew a limited either-sex tag. All summer I heard about how I should get a monster, but in all my scouting and hunting I never saw anything until my last weekend. I started thinking I was gonna be feasting on tag soup. Probably didnt help that I never hunted elk until this year, and didnt really know my @ss from a hole in the ground. That didnt stop me from logging in the miles, and fortunately the persistence paid off. I came upon this guy and in the timber and double lunged him with my 270. I underestimated the pack out (he was about 2 miles and 2000 ft up from the truck-deep in the timber in the photo below). I took the backstrap and tenderloins out late that nite, almost needing new underwear in the process thanks to some huns bursting out of the sagebrush around midnite. My brother came the next day and we finished the job-so I guess I owe him some of that delicious backstrap. Pretty hooked on elk hunting now, and cant wait ill next season!
