i've heard alot about colstrip when it comes to mule deer hunting, and i was wondering if there is easy access to public land, and what is the best time to plan a few days to go down? should i expect to be shooting long distances?

Have only hunted there once; don't know how much public land there is available with good muley hunting. You might call the folks at Montana Decoy as they are based in Colstrip. I know there are good elk and muley in that area but there are a lot of ranches over there too. Good luck.

I don't think there's much for public land in that area. Your best bet would probably be to look for a BMA around there.

I've hunted some of the BMA west of there and closer to Hysham. Saw good looking deer on the mining ground you can't hunt and the best one was at night right beside Ace Hardware, they sure seem to know the safe spots!

ya they sure do. i've heard they allow primative weapons such as bow and black powder but i dont really know if there is any truth to that or not.
