This is the first aftermarket barrel that I bought that was shipped to me instead of a gunsmith. It is a Bartlein 5R #3 in 7mm. The end of the barrel is stamped .284 and .277. Is it .284 or .277?

Disregard @noharleyyet it absolutely cannot be either.

The groove diameter is .284”, the lands diameter is .277”. Those are standard measurements for 7mm or .284” barrel. Some companies allow you to order barrels about .001” tighter than standard on one or both of those measurements, and that’s why they stamp that on there. It can be chambered for any cartridge which shoots .284” bullets. It is not suitable for anything .277”.

Because is has 5 groves, you can’t measure from one groove to the other groove, but if you drew a circle whose circumference touched the deepest portion of every groove, it would measure .284” in diameter, and if you drew a circle that touched the top of every land, it would measure .277”. You can measure that diameter with a small hole gauge.

Thanks for the correction Bill...I shanked it

Great choice on a barrel! Every Bartlein I’ve had or been around has been an exceptional shooter.
Bill hit it exactly with what the measurements mean. It’s also a 9 twist!😁
What are you building? Finish length? Fluted?

I just put 35 rounds down a new bartlein, no comparison to the brux it replaced but to be fair, I didn't really know much with that brux and I think it paid the price.

This was my break in and sight in routine using CLR for carbon and copper killer for copper

1st round 81.5 gr rl25, a bit too much powder.....
patch was dark blue with copper then it went away with another quickly

Back to drawing board and loaded 77gr fowler, 77, 77.5, 78, 78.5, 79 into 1 dot

cleaned it after 3 and 3
IMG_4201 (Small).JPG

loaded 3 each, 77, 78, 79 shooting round robin

cleaned after the 9

sighted in for 300 and 500, 8 shots total
300 yard target with sighter

cleaned again

Typically I’ve found the first few rounds to copper up on a new barrel and then it vastly cleans up. That looks pretty good already especially since RL25 is a pretty dirty powder. What cartridge and bullet Bob?

7stw, 143 hammers, 26" #3 8 twist barrel. First time I've used them; bought 50 a cpl weeks ago. I have 800 Barnes is anybody is interested LOL
