    War on Elk in Montana?

I hear they're starting a new award, the "Montana Slam", awarded to hunters who shoot a general cow elk and doe deer along with 5 more doe B tag deer and 3 more B tag cow elk. You get a pin, a patch and another cow tag of your choice :)

What would be the best Pack Animal for Backcountry Elk

in northern MN we called giardia 'the drizzlies'. I imagine your horse was a bit put out by the time you had to ditch your britches!

What would be the best Pack Animal for Backcountry Elk

Thanks, I was only thinking pack animals - goats and llamas don't ride well either though I would love to see someone riding a goat into the mountains :)

What would be the best Pack Animal for Backcountry Elk

Are burros not a thing anymore? I know they're sure footed and can carry 100# or so each. They used to be the gold standard

    Montana HD 270

It's not fear, it's that there is very little land that isn't less than 2 mi from a road! LOL

    Montana HD 270

I hunted there a couple years ago on advice from a 'friend'. It's hard to get away from the roads and the elk are either on private or at least 2 miles from a road. I won't go back but if I had to I would hunt low on the edges of private. Saw a lot of black bears but no grizzly or wolves.

Some guy did too... I guess I...

    Young Cow?

As a female with a weight problem I have similar issues getting meat out of the woods. I try to never hunt below the truck or where I could drive the truck. Weeble wobbling down hill with a load is easier for me as I can keep my joints aligned and the weight over my hips. I also never take...

    Archery elk

I hunted there for a couple weeks last year and saw tons of elk, all on private lands. Mostly in one huge herd of thousands that was crossing a road between two private fields. I saw 1000's of elk cross a road just south of Livingstone on one evening and spent days trying to find a way to...

    Pus Pockets and the Like

I once shot a buck with 3" of wood in his backstrap, like he'd jumped over something and speared himself. I also shot a bear that had about half of a 12 ga. old-school slug in it's back, right over the spine between the skin and the body. It was one of the cap with fins type slug. There was no...
