Meateater Podcast episode #155: Guns - Lead study in ND

I thought about it last night some. I hunted 14 years with lead, exclusively with Nosler partition, both in 30-06 and 12 Ga and I believe I lost one animal to a bad shot, totally my fault. The lead ban went into effect in my area in 2006 so I have 13 years using lead free. My success rate was...

Finally found a picture of my hunting area. This is on VAFB and is pretty typical of the vegitation. That's Chuck with a better than average buck about 200 yards off a paved road...in a shotgun only area. If you imagine that deer standing, there's not much to aim in the brush, usually the...

Sure, that's true..but then you want get many people lining up to give bone and tissue samples.

    Newb in California

VAFB is doable, just a couple hours up the road. Good deer, decent hogs. I knew alot of guys at hueneme that went every weekend for pigs...or quail when in season. You're in a good spot. Good duck there as well. I'm in the San Diego area and can get to VAFB in 4 hours. That's an easy day.

    Reason for Grinder Clogging

This. Try this before spending the big bucks. Cabelas/bass pro have all the size plates and blades for almost all standard size grinders. If that doesn't work, go big. Mine's a Globe 1 HP rated to 250 lbs an hour, but I still have to do my part to make sure it doesn't clog. make sure the...

I see where the confusion is. It's not that I like neck and head shots...it's all that's visible. It's usual the only shot I'm presented with. I'm talking tall, thick brush. The kind that makes your shins look like hamburger and the rest of your body looks like you lost a knife fight. If...

LOL...Quack you pretty much nailed it! I fell through a manzanita patch that came to my shoulders before I touched ground. If my buddy hadn't seen me go in, I'd still be there. awww good times. Anyway, all these studies, performance issues etc with non-lead is old. I remember hearing the...

Given the terrain and vegetation I work with, I've done just that . I pass on alot of animals because I have no confidence in the non-lead preformance. My experience is that it's just not as good as an Accubond or Partion. Hell, till Federal came out with their Trophy Copper Slugs, I was...

Meateater Podcast episode #155: Guns - Lead study in ND

It's common complaint among many, many CA hunters. Some guys report no problems with the stuff, but I'd say more complaints then positve comments. I tried Hornady's GMX for pig hunting one year. I shot what I estimated was a 200 lb sow at 40 yards, from a sitting position. The pig bolted. I...

I'm happy for you. Glad you've had a positive experience. I have not. After two rifles, and thousands of rounds reloaded and/or store bought, I find lead-free ammo less effective than lead. My personal experience in the coastal sage of CA is that rifle ammo punches thru the animal, leaving a...

Meateater Podcast episode #155: Guns - Lead study in ND

I'm not the only CA hunter to experience that. Perhaps the better way to exchange information is to ask "why is that?" rather than suggesting a fellow hunter quit. The ingrained individualism of hunters is the very trait that's being exploited to kill the sport. Divide and conquer. But hey...

Meateater Podcast episode #155: Guns - Lead study in ND

As I said before, the lead exposure in birds is different from human exposure. There's a difference between systemic, chronic exposure to lead in living tissue and acute, one time exposure to metallic lead in a dead deer. The bullet fragments that we might accidently eat pass through our...

Meateater Podcast episode #155: Guns - Lead study in ND

That was the case here in CA. After the original lead ban went into effect, the game wardens reported 3000 hunter-warden contacts yeilded 99.97% compliance with the law (just 3 hunters using lead), and it zero effect on the lead poisoning rate. Just before the final 3 year study on...

https://www.peregrinefund.org/subsites/conference-lead/2008%20CDC%20ND_Final_TripReport_5NOV08.pdf Page 9, near the bottom. A big chunk of my job is supervising lead removal projects, so I have a professional interest in human lead exposure. When I heard about the proposed study, I contacted...

Well, there are photos of condors eating paint chips off a ranger tower in the Pinnacles National Park. Subsquent testing of the paint confirmed it contained lead. Ironic this happened at Pinnacles, ground zero for the condor recovery effort. The pics and test results were presented at a CA...

That is correct, but not the complete story. The study goes on to say: "While this study suggests that consumption of wild game meat can adversely affect PbB, no participant had PbB higher than the CDC recommended threshold of 10μg/dl—the level atwhich CDC recommends case management; and the...

This is good advice. I recommend that everyone do this if they move from state to state.

Moving from KS ---> San Diego, CA

I'm a retired Naval Officer and lived in San Diego County for decades. 1. No. On Jan. 1, it will be illegal to import into California ammunition purchased in another state. The legislature passed a bill in 2016 that would have allowed hunters to bring in up to 50 rounds from out of state...
