How long did it take for your first elk?

Third year of elk hunting I shot a cow (rifle). I was so damn happy. Since then my success rate is about 50 percent. Based on my experience it takes 10 days of hard hunting in a season to get an elk, on average.

Montana - Time to Shake it Up?

As far as I can tell, based on the laws they have passed the current administration and supermajority do not believe in local control, and in fact have us headed in the opposite direction.

    Lessons learned: hunting partners

Hunting is like skiing for me: I don't want anybody else's interpretation of the experience to impact my own. I know I'm going to have a good time hunting or skiing regardless of the conditions, and having others along can only detract from that. Only exception is I love skiing with my...

Mule Deer Meat Opinions - A Poll

I can't add much to what's been said except I have never had a whitetail or elk that I didn't think tasted great, but I have had a couple mule deer that I did not like. And I've had lots of mule deer that were just fine.

    As they lay

Yeah thanks, my dad gave me that 870 when he stopped hunting. He and I hunted a lot of waterfowl when I was growing up, but where I live now in MT isn't great waterfowl hunting. Since I live near a weapons-restriction area with a lot of whitetail deer and seemingly few people willing to hunt...

    4 days in New Orleans

Honestly the friendliest people I've ever encountered traveling. Black, white, tourist, service worker, did not matter. Just met so many very nice, chatty people. No bad vibes at all. Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park are easily walkable from the FQ and interesting from a historical...

    4 days in New Orleans

Was just there for a few days for a conference, and my family joined me for a weekend. Did a bayou swamp tour, saw some alligators (kind of a big deal for us Montanans). Spent a day walking around the Garden District, ate lunch at Empanola, that was great. Ate dinner one night at Adolpho's on...

    Lessons learned: hunting partners

I only hunt alone or with my wife, and she doesn't carry a gun. She'll carry an elk quarter though! This story made me sad. But, if you learn from it, then that's a good thing. You're young in elk hunting years.

    MT opener

Second opener in a row I had to miss. This time for a work conference in New Orleans, which was actually a blast (not the work part, but the rest of it). I'll get out this week and drop a six point. 😂🤣

Packing for first trip to hunt elk???

I got a little 12 x 12 inch square of an old foam sleeping pad I always take elk hunting, just in case I want to sit down for a while and the ground is wet. Weighs next to nothing. Braveheart, I have hunted a small private land area like you describe, and as others have noted, if the elk aren't...

    GPS or phone

Power pack is a good idea, but even with the power pack, you're still reliant 100% on your phone with no backup if it stops working (and they do, I've seen it). Garmin eTrex 20 is like $99 and super reliable as a backup. Just my opinion but I like redundancy in my safety systems.

    A look inside FWP

Over Homecoming weekend in Missoula a friend who works for FWP spent about an hour ranting to me about all the problems at the agency. It was somewhat eye opening to hear how bad it really is from an "insider."

Grizz kills 2 in Banff w/ update

Agree, I don't have the numbers but it does seem like a lot of attacks, and a lot of bears shot and wounded/killed too. I spent a lot of time in grizzly country this summer and saw seven bears, but fortunately none of them acted aggressively.

Grizz kills 2 in Banff w/ update

Similar to one of the bears in Night of the Grizzlies, if I recall correctly. Very sad situation, they did everything the right way, just wrong place wrong time. RIP
