    ***OFFICIAL*** 2023 SPRING BEAR THREAD

That’s what I’m expecting. My “hope” is that sows will still be concentrating around green up Since they will be delayed leaving the den. So I will be looking for green patches just below snow line. Hoping to catch a boar on the prowl for a good time. I have punched tags for a mule deer and a...

    ***OFFICIAL*** 2023 SPRING BEAR THREAD

This will be my first time spring bear hunting. I wasn’t able to get away until the end of May. I was worried I would be way too late. But after the winter in SW Montana, I am starting to think things may work out.

    Antelope...Lets See Them!!!

My buddy and I decided to head west from Ohio for the first time. I got this guy on public land in Wyoming with my bow.

    Thank you!

    17. We will show up with our bows for the last few days of archery. And then have our rifles if we can’t get it done in the first two days. Because of the tips on here I was able to find public foot access to the Fortification Creek Wilderness Study Area.

    Thank you!

Because of the tips, tricks, and information you guys have shared on this forum I just got a major win. My buddy and I are going on our first western hunt this fall. We chose Wyoming antelope because it was an easy to draw tag with high success rates. But, access in these easy to draw units...

    PA bear hunting regulatioins

I was reading the PA bear hunting regulations from the PA Game Commission website and noticed something that will drastically change the way I plan on hunting. It appears that it is illegal to skin and quarter a black bear in the field in PA. This pretty much makes it impossible to pack the...

Archery Elk Newbie Template/Approach.... and a question

As a fellow rookie elk hunter this post may be the most helpful I have read on how to get out of paralysis by analysis. I keep jumping back and forth between choosing CO, MT, & WY. Listing out my wants/needs in a first hunt and assigning points seems like a very straightforward way to narrow...

    Non-Resident vs Resident Unit selections

Why do some units get a lot of use by residents and others get a lot of use by non-residents? There seems to be a lot of disparity in unit selections and even success rates. For example: Wyoming Unit 6 had 1037 resident hunters and only 266 non-res. But, resident days/harvest is 24.1 while...

    Easy to draw vs OTC

Is there really a difference between an OTC hunt and a tag that can be drawn by a first time applicant? I would prefer rifle in Montana but am open to Colorado as well. Thanks in advance. Specifically, Will I see a lot more hunters in an OTC Unit?

We are determined to go elk hunting. But we are open going other places that are better options for first timers.

    Montana Backcountry Units 150 151 280 316 first timer

Thank you to everyone for the advice and information. There certainly seems to be a consensus that this would be a big challenge. We have talked and we are going to look into a guide much more seriously than we were planning. Though I have to admit. The idea of heading out alone (or with one...

    Montana Backcountry Units 150 151 280 316 first timer

Getting as much meat as possible out of there is definitely a concern and the primary reason we started discussing pack animals last week. Two of us are 100 percent committed to hunting elk next fall. We have two kore guys that say they are going, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they back out...

    Montana Backcountry Units 150 151 280 316 first timer

Those ratios are definitely intimidating. I had no idea the numbers would be that skewed. Where did you find those? It could be helpful if we decide to look at another unit.

    Montana Backcountry Units 150 151 280 316 first timer

Right now the plan is to backpack in and out. I have an EXO 5500 and my buddy picked up a KUIU. We have decided to investigate hiring someone with pack animals to bring us in, drop us off, and pick us up. But not sure on the costs or how to go about finding/arranging that.

    Montana Backcountry Units 150 151 280 316 first timer

We are looking at bringing a GPS and paper map with compass. That brings up another question. Where do you get your maps? Do you laminate them to protect from weather? I’m not sure I stated this question clearly enough. I know my calorie needs for trail hiking 12-15 mile days in...

    Montana Backcountry Units 150 151 280 316 first timer

Thanks for taking the time to read this and help a new elk hunter. My buddy and I are looking to take our first elk hunt next fall (2019). We plan on back packing in to one of the four Montana backcountry units for a rifle hunt during the rut. Am I getting in over my head or is jumping in...
