Looks like the bulk of the public land is in the South / SE part of that unit. Do you know if the county roads are available to drive on off the main highways? I though I've heard in the past that sometimes roads get fenced in NM but perhaps not county roads....
Well, just found out this morning I drew a NM Antelope tag in Unit 38... beat those 1% odds LOL. Been to NM for elk but never antelope. In fact, I have never hunted antelope.... though I've watched plenty of Randy's videos :)
Any insight or help someone could provide would be appreciated. Not...
Pick a unit, with reasonable access, go and have fun. As someone who started traveling west about 4 years ago, it’s much more about the country and the comraderie than the result. We’ve had years we’ve had great results and others not so much.... but it’s always fun regardless. Now one of my...
Drew a NM Unit 49 elk tag this year. First time in NM. Not looking for your honey hole, willing to do all the work. Would love any insight anyone has as I work through my extensive planning over the summer. If you can give me a few tips/insights that could save me some time/be more efficient it...
Anyone else draw the late Unit 49 rifle tag? Drew my 3rd choice. I have experience elk hunting but will be my first time in NM. Would appreciate any tips from those with knowledge or if someone else drew perhaps we could collaborate. Might be going solo...
I noticed when I went into WYGF to buy my pref points I wasn’t able to buy an elk pref point. I drew an elk tag this year, am I not able to get the pref point? It was greyed out when I was in the system. I assume that’s the case but wanted to verify. I’m a NR- thanks in advance!
Just drew Unit 34, type 1 with 3 non-resident points. Had only 8% odds based on my 3 points for this limited entry unit. Stoked, it will be my first elk hunt EVER... lots of work/research to do!!!
I’ve lived in the Midwest my whole life, and have started applying out west for nearly every species in most logical states. I think the internet age has made a big difference. I always dreamed of it but now the information/knowledge is so accessible that it appears much more doable (though it...
Understand the needs at the time your hunting them/adjust terrain accordingly. Stay flexible and mobile. Be willing to go where most will not. Find the hidden holes. Pick apart the terrain your glassing. Have multiple spots / plans cause your first choice will most times not be the best choice...
I have an idea of what the course is about from the thread, do you need to bring a firearm? I’ll be in AZ, Phoenix area specifically for Spring Break and was contemplating taking the field test. Would need to take the online course as well
How possible is it to hire someone in advance to help you pack out the meat if necessary? Like a local outfitter? Probably depends on the area/outfitter but just curious... might be something to think about for a solo hunt as well.
