I prefer the South Tyrol region north of Venice myself. That time of year skiing would be an option if you’re into that. Here are a couple pics from last summer. You can stop by Bolzano to check out the Otzi exhibit.
My grandfather hunted with a 30-40 Krag from the 1920’s well into the 50’s until his eyesight started aging out. He could’ve bought glasses, I suppose, but instead bought a Remington 721 30-06 with a scope and hunted with that the rest of his life.
I've have a 6'6" 2wt I built years ago just for fishing little brushy brookie streams back east. It's great for it's purpose but my go to rod for small streams these days is an 8' 3wt that I bought at a garage sale some years back. The longer rod does quick roll casts and "bow-and-arrow" casts...
My parents lived in LA for a couple years back in the mid-60’s. James Arness lived just up the street. One day the Marshall had a garage sale at his house and my dad ended up buying an acoustic guitar from him. I managed to destroy the thing by riding it down the stairs like a sled a few months...
You can run pieces of copper scrub pads up and down the bore. Make sure they’re actually copper or brass and not copper coated steel pads. They do a really nice job cleaning out the bore including hard to get at rifling deposits. After that, you can give the bore a good look over to see if it’s...
Isaac Haines 1760’s-era 45cal flintlock shooting a patched round ball. This was last week during Pennsylvania’s late “flintlock only” season. I haven’t lived in PA for over 30 years but 4 of us own a cabin in the heart of Kinzua country and the January rendezvous has become our tradition.
My GSP would chase deer and elk when he was younger. I worked with him but ended up with an e-collar when he started chasing sheep. Problem solved...until he jumped his first lion. He’s chased 2 past me in the last few years that I’ve seen and who knows how many that I haven’t. Those things...
It makes me cringe when I think back to running trap lines for many years clad in Carhartt brown during PA’s deer seasons. I’d hate to guess how many times I ended up in someone’s crosshairs before some hunter figured out I was just some guy digging a dirt hole set at the edge of a corn field. I...
Last Friday my water pump crapped out in my truck causing it to overheat while hunting in a remote area up in the OR cascades. It was 10 miles or so from the Lionshead fire which had been slowly burning for several weeks. I ended up making a 20 mile round trip hike to the nearest blacktop FS...
I'd rather sacrifice yardage than limit my coffee. Sometimes the only motivation for climbing out of a warm sleeping bag on a frosty morning is the thought of a hot cup of coffee.
Just curious why you chose interior AK that far north vs south of the Alaska range (Willow/Talkeetna/the Kenai)? I'm a couple years behind you but ultimately plan to do the same thing in 2-3 years.
