Great write up and i know how you feel. I hit a 6x6 last year in the shoulder blade, it still sucks knowing that you inflicted pain and possible death and not finishing the hunt.
I called in a bull with a Cow call on sunday in Montana. I bugled at him after i messed up the setup and he didnt care, and just walked off. I didnt hear any other bugles.

I have had this happen twice now. I was squatting and a herd of elk came running over the hill about 150 yards away. I stood up rifle in hand, never got a good shot, once they were gone i wiped and went after them.
I lived in Boise for 5 years. It was a great place to live. There was always something to do, but very outdoor friendly. If he has atv's or motorcycles there is a lot of Offroad areas to play on. Just north of Boise has some great hunting and fishing spots. I have been to Portland many...
When i bought my 7mm Mag in 2007 i would just buy the core-lokts and they would shot beautifully. I ran out a couple years ago and bought another box and i couldn't hit anything, i actually missed an elk with them. So i tried to site my rifle in to them and could not get any kind of grouping...
I have used chains a lot over the years, make sure they fit before you head into the mountain and put them on before you are stuck. Its a lot more fun to just lay them down and drive over them and hook them up on the top of the tire then it is laying in a mud puddle trying to get them on.
I spotted a shooter bull last night at about 1400 yards right at dark. He had 6 cows with him. Just for fun I bugled at him and he looked up but did nothing. I threw a couple cow calls and same thing. Is anyone getting any responses. I was hunting in the Helena area.
My first season when I was 12 it took about an hour to shoot my first elk. Had a small herd run by at about 150 yards and stop. I was shooting a 243 at the time and she dropped first shot. My first deer was sometime in my second season.
