Based upon your first picture, you are in the right part of the haystack. I have seen them just south of there on the middle ridge above the outfitters property, but never in that exact spot.
August 30th is getting close!
As some have mentioned, when you see the ram for you guys you'll know it. And if you get him killed, it wont matter if hes 154 or 174 - you will have earned a worthy right to puff up your chests a bit. Having said that, setting a reasonable goal like age, base or length measurements, overall...
Where is the tag for? I often find that the “where“ has a lot to do with the “how“ I go about judging sheep.
This seems to be supported by the comparison above between the Wyoming natives and the Montana freaks. Great ram pics btw millerpaul!
Glad you hear you saw some mature rams in Perreau. That Salmon side does have quite a number of sheep and they have taken some nice rams historically. Unfortunately for fowlhunter that more accessible, more sheep filled country is excluded from his tag. I would speculate he wont be the first...
Peculiar post considering I think your last one was about the sheep tag you drew. Hope youre not having second thoughts.
Oak has it right when he says not all sheep country is created equal.
Solo sucks at any age and, despite its popularity, is a surefire way to screw up that sheep tag. Find...
This unit includes some new territory this year not previously huntable on a 28-1 tag. I assume thats going to change the amount of pressure on the wilderness side of the unit and may even increase success rates. That should be encouarging to you.
Dont let the 27-2 elitists fool you - the east...
Dont drive yourself nuts staring at google earth - you still have 12+ weeks to go! And you may not step foot in the sheep containing parts of that unit til well into July.
Focus your energy on figuring out what a decent ram from that country looks like. Get a good feel for what you would, and...
Do you have the past harvest data yet? That will show you generally where the harvest has been concentrated in the past. Then you can decide how best to access those places.
I believe youre right, Bryan. It has always been presented as a late hunt and I think '15 was the first year it opened 8/30. They didnt kill one in that season but I think the idea was give the tagholder more time to maybe get lucky and find them in either the summer ground or where they migrate...
I dont think theyve taken very many rams out of there so the info available may be a little scarce. Lots of big country and not a ton of sheep. Id take advantage of the season lengthening and get out there before they leave their summer range on the border. But its a long ways in no matter where...
Not sure what your hangup is with the extended season in a prior year. According to your writeup you made the choice not to hunt the last 8 days of your season so would an extension really have changed anything? Dont dwell on it man. You had fun. Just wait it out and apply again - for somewhere...
They did have a tough year. Killed at least one on that side during the late hunt though.
Being upset with IDFG over not killing a ram seems like a waste of your energy to me. You hunted one of the toughest open units for sheep out there and had a great experience. The logistics of those hunts...
Nice looking ram for sure. I dont think he has the length others have given him, but he holds his mass quite well. My guess: 34" will stop his long horn but he has really decent mass, so......163"-165".
