I’ve said this for years. My hope is we avoid permits by going separate seasons for mule deer, separate license for mule deer, pick your region.

The way they(the dept) is doing the surveys is flawed. The survey says 60k mule deer in R6. I don’t there is 60k mulies in 6.

From different guys I’ve spoken to in Sonora Mx the deer there will moved by rain, 30-70 miles no problem. Greens up the deer go there, bet eastern Mt would find similar happenings.

I’ve been texting a buddy up in souther Sask, just barely across border. SERM(sask environment resource management) has gone scorched earth on the mule deer across the fence. They killed and estimated 2k mulies. According to my buddy, nothing left along border. Going to affect 670 for years...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Come to R6 or 7 November 10-30 and tell me a 5.5 week season spreads hunters out. The ease of rut hunting concentrates hunters, end of discussion. what you’re lobbying for looks like “let’s just stay status quo, it’ll be fine”. If we stay status quo and do nothing we wind up...

Agreed, to many ppl are the problem. Give everyone a flintlock and a brass telescope from 1875 and you can still let ppl hunt, they just won’t be as successful. If we want to continue being an opportunity state we have to limit technology, or face going LE permits. This was my point...

There is a technology problem too. When ppl reduce hunting to a range finder and a 1000-1200 yard dial it in magnum rifle scoped that’ll hit a 10 inch plate, sad. It has reduced hunting to “target practice”. Shoot a steel plate, not an elk or mule deer, better yet a coyote,

Eventually it’s LE permits statewide. We’re trying to come up with solutions to stave off the inevitable.

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Yes, inevitably and eventually we wind up at LE permits. Perhaps by limiting technology we can stave off permits inevitably. Limit high power rifles to on week(or weekend). Have a primitive muzzleloader season for 4 weeks and archery primitive season for 4 weeks, with one week compound...
