heart/lung shot
I've been very pleased with how the 180 grain barnes triple-shock has performed in my 300wm. I've taken Kudu, gembok, blue wilderbeast, black bear and mountain goat with it.
IMO- the 300wm is too fast for the ballistic tip. Overall, use a well made bullet (Barnes, accubonds...

I'd love to take you up on the charter but sheep season is cancelled this year. Atleast for those for those of us in Afghanistan. Sheep season will be closed before I can make it home.
Thanks
Thanks for sharing the awesome pics and the story. That's incredible that you get your daughters out with you. My hats off to you. No hunting for spring bears this year where I'm at :(.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I guess I'm just going to have to wait until I get back to Anchorage and talk to a gunsmith or two and see what I end up with. I'm tempted to try to modifiy my wifes older model 7 7mm-08 while I'm at it.
Does it ever end. It seems like I always want...
If you have really good glass there will be times you can use 60x. Most of the time you won't need more than 50x. I have the 20-50 wide eyepiece on my leica and it's awesome 90 percent of time but there was a few times when looking/judging sheep I wish I had the 60x. (conditions do have to be...
I had a leupold spotting scope once. It was the leupold sequoia that my wife gave me for Christmas one year. I highly recommend that you stay away from that model. It was heavy and although it was a 20-60x80 you could never get a clear picture view past 40x. Leupold would not refund it at...
You can get a VX2 with the LRD reticle. It will get you really close out to 600 yards. I don't think a CDS is nessary at hunting distances. I have one on my 270wsm and it's simple and works really well.
Thanks for all the insight guys. The Kimber Montana's are nice but I didn't really like the grip on the stock. I've never picked up a Sako Finnlight but I've heard lots of good things about them.
Just for discussion- Do you think there is a noticeable difference between a 270 and 270WSM? I...
mtelkhntr,
Thanks, I have thought about the Win 70 extreme weather. I may have to wait till I get back home and can actually put my hands on few different models. Still trying to stay light though.
Every custom rifle I've looked up has been in a price range around $3000 plus. Heck I do a flyout hunt for the difference in price. Hunting in AK is expensive. What would you recommend if I went the custom route?
Really that heavy. I want a mountain/hiking rifle not a bench rifle. How much does just the rifle weigh? I'm trying to get down to 7lbs ready to hunt weight.
I looked at the savage but it doesn't look it is offered in a stainless rifle with a synthetic stock. Some of my hunts are in Prince William Sound or on Kodiak (salt water), plus it rains a lot in Aug and Sept in Alaska.
Thanks so far.
Right now the top contender on my list is a tikka t3 lite or super lite but I don't think the superlite comes in the WSM calibers. I love the 270WSM but I doubt game would ever know the difference in 200fps difference. I thought about moving up to a 300 or 300wsm to help anchor...
