New To NW Montana - any advice?

You bet I'm into the jungle brush. A scope is barely of any use here in NH. Longest shot I've had with a rifle was in a fresh clear cut, about 80 yards. Woods so thick you can't pick out a landmark if your life depended on it -- which it sometimes does : ).

New To NW Montana - any advice?

Thanks for the tips guys. I was hoping that hunting on foot, further from the roads, that I'd have some success --- but by the looks of all the forest service maps, anyone can drive just about anywhere up in there. I'll have to get the list of road closings & hope to find a good sized remote...

New To NW Montana - any advice?

So I just moved to Yaak, MT so that my wife could be back close to her folks. I've spent the last 34 years hunting and backpacking in NH. I'm looking forward to learning to hunt here in Lincoln County --- looks like it'll take me a while just to learn all the licensing, permiting & other regs...

    Dehydrated Meal Packs

I've been using Backpacker's Pantry for ages. Only qualm that I had was the absence of big chunks of meat (which none of the freeze-dried/dehydrated foods offer). Solved that by bringing along pre-cooked chicken breast or tuna/salmon steak pouches (found w/ the canned chicken & tuna). They are...

    Advice on Backpack Sleeping Bags

Stick to "store" brands - Eastern Mountain Sports Boreal 0 degree is regularly $199 (I just checked online & it's currently selling for $159 on sale). Great bag, brand w/ a great reputation & 100% satisfaction guarantee. Weighs in at 4 lb 5 oz. The REI Lumen 10 degree is worth a look too. I have...

    Cots Good/Bad?

I have to 2nd what Lawnboy said. The highest end cot is worthless if it won't insulate you from the cold. At the very least, lay down a closed cell foam pad, like the ThermaRest Ridge Rest Solar on the cot, under the bag. If it's comfort you're looking for, bring along a lightweight camp chair...

    Optimus Crux Stove set

Crux Crux is a simple stove. The Crux Lite is the same thing only the pot supports don't fold down. I've got 1 of the Lites. Also have an MSR Pocket Rocket and a JetBoil. Can't go wrong w/ all 3 in temps above 35 degrees. Below that, canister (isobutane) stoves all lose pressure. If you want to...

    Granite Gear Flatbed

Anyone have any experience/photos of a backpacking hunt with a Granite Gear Stratus Flatbed? I have been backing for 20 years in the mountains of NH, VT & ME. I am moving out west and planning my first backpack hunt for elk and muley this fall. I have worked for 10 years at an outdoor sports...
