    Sako A7 Big Game/Roughtech pro - impressions?

I'm probably going to go for it. My only hesitation is the barrel - I'm afraid I'll regret having a heavier contour barrel up front. It's hard to get a sense in the store of how a rifle will feel in the field. I would be interested to compare the weight of the 24" fluted medium barrel on the...

    Sako A7 Big Game/Roughtech pro - impressions?

Thanks for all the replies. I've been looking for a stainless rifle with a high quality synthetic stock, and these are available locally for $700 plus tax - cheaper than the Tikka stainless models at the store. I honestly can't find a better deal on the sort of rifle I'm looking for - even if I...

    Sako A7 Big Game/Roughtech pro - impressions?

That does help. Honestly I wouldn't know that the barrel was thicker than a standard sporter barrel if I hadn't read it online. In person it felt great, better than my Weatherby Vanguard that I like a lot and weighs about the same (I think).

    Sako A7 Big Game/Roughtech pro - impressions?

Since I handled one of these in the store I’ve been doing research like crazy. The reviews seem good overall except for some ejection issues. The gun isn’t light, but my other rifles are a Howa and a Weatherby so 7.5 lbs isn’t a big deal. It’s interesting that the barrel is apparently a...

    Sako A7 roughtech weight

Saw a Sako A7 “Big Game” (apparently also called the roughtech) at the store and was very impressed. A long barrel (over 24”) and a fluted stainless barrel. I’m seeing different weights for this gun online and was wondering if anyone here has one and knows the actual weight. I’m looking at a...

Vanguard Wilderness or a DIY Howa Alpine

I'm a big Howa fan, including the Weatherby Vanguard series of rifles. I have a mini action .223 (great rifle, needs a flush magazine or hinged floorplate before I can really recommend it, though) and a Vanguard S2 in .270 Win with the normal synthetic stock. I really like both rifles, but the...

    HOWA questions here

Thanks everyone for the input. Sets my mind at ease. I saw the Alpine Rifle style stocks on ebay are all sold out - are there any other stock options out there for the Howa lightweight contour short actions?

    HOWA questions here

How do you find accuracy with the thin barrel? I was told by a stranger on the internet that your shots will start walking after just one shot. I'm not looking for extended 1moa accuracy over the course of a lengthy range session, but I also want to be able to have confidence in followup shots.

    HOWA questions here

I've handled one in person, and it looked just like the 20" lightweight action and barrel that I've seen on other Howa rifles, only cerakoted. I'll bet it's the exact same.

    HOWA questions here

People with the Howa Kuiu rifles with 20 inch barrels - what are your thoughts? I was initially leaning towards a long action Howa with a 22 inch barrel for elk and mule deer, but the lightweight Kuiu models are such a good deal with the cerakote that I think I might go with one in 308 or 7mm-08.

Howa 30-06 - too heavy for mountain hunting?

Everyone's comments are making a ton of sense. There's so much to consider when buying a rifle. There's weight and recoil. There's ballistics. There's the folks who say you need more power for when less-than-ideal shots aren't available, and there's the folks who say that you shouldn't be taking...

Howa 30-06 - too heavy for mountain hunting?

Thanks everyone for the replies. My dream (probably not realistic) is for this rifle to complete my collection of rifles. I feel like with my .223 mini action and .22lr marlin, a .30-06 will cover pretty much anything else I could ever plan on hunting. With Howa rifles available for about $400...

Howa 30-06 - too heavy for mountain hunting?

I know that Howas are popular here. I have a mini action that I really like (even though it needs a hinged floorplate!), and I like it enough that I would like to get a Howa rifle as my first big-game rifle. I live in western Colorado, so I want something for elk, and I've kind of convinced...
