I wasn't apologizing. We were both very happy with our bucks. I was just stating that now I got my feet wet, I would try to shoot larger bucks. I've been hunting whitetails since I was a little kid, but I am definitely a rookie when it comes to muleys. We had a blast!
My brother and I did a DIY archery mule deer hunt in Southern WY. We had never hunted the west before. We saw some nice ones and we each shot a smallish buck. I'm sure neither of us will shoot deer this small on future hunts, but for our for DIY western hunt, we were thrilled.

I'm another fellow Illinoisian, and I'm also going on my first western hunt this year...in fact, I'm leaning tomorrow. It is an archery deer/ cow elk hunt in the Snowy Range. I'm a bit further South than you are. I'm not far from Carbondale.

Batteries do okay, the standard claims 75 minutes or so, it probably gets a little less, but not horrible. I've tried a generic and it didn't hold up at all.
Canon Vixia HF100 is what I use. They don't make it anymore, but you could probably pick one up for under $200 on ebay. Here is a sample of a deer I self-filmed.
